ReplyActually a large chunk of 30318 is around the HomePark/Georgia Tech area, and lots of people call this Midtown or West Midtown. That is probably why the author said "in and around Midtown".

Bryan, great idea! Why didn't you think of that about 3 years ago dang it! Oh well...but it makes more sense than using the hotel tax money for a stadium!

ReplyI am not a big fan of Mayor Reed, I'd say I am luke warm on his work so far. However I'd like to point out that he did a pretty good job brokering a decent solution to the hugely expensive retirement fiasco for city employees, has worked to continue the swer/storm sewer rebuild (started by previous mayor and that was neglected by ALL the previous mayors of the last 50 years or so), has increased police numbers, and has avoided scandel unlike many recent big city mayors. Also, I want to point out that Atlanta has always had large poor areas, and ALL previous mayors have neglected these areas and focused on big projects like the airport, the GA dome, the Olympics/stadium etc. especially to the detrement of infrastructure like roads and sewers. I think the only real way to improve the rough poor areas is more decent jobs so that residents actually can get...and encouraging them to take these jobs and improve themselves (I know that is a whole 'nother topic, but it is all related).

ReplyI like this community and appreciate the owners and workers putting a great idea into actual reality and making it work. Those residents I have talked to, and even those who own there as a weekend type home, seem to really enjoy the community. Great investment all around - from nature to farming to food to community to value. Hopefully this will work in other areas.

Cherie, have you challenged your property tax assessment? If the value of your home has gone down, then the tax value, and thus taxes should be reduced. If you know a good real estate agent or appraiser they should be able to help you.

Cherie, that is not the renters fault. Perhaps the tax commissioner is under valuing the rental property, since the landflord of a SFR whould be paying about the same taxes as the owner occupant of a simialr SFR. Perhaps you want all parents to increase the payment of taxes so those without children can get a tax cut? How about just increasing the sales tax to offset lower property taxes? Just like a landowner of a lower value rental home rented to parents with children is paying less school taxes than a nicer home occupied by the owner with children, this owner with children is paying less in school taxes than a family with no children living in a much nicer house. It is a complicated issue, but again I don't blame renters.

Congrats to Marlene...if only more of us operated that way...I am trying. I am surpised how fast people look for the negative rather than what they can take from the article to improve their chances of a better retirement.
