On the article Grady HS Shooting: Many Questions Remain Unanswered

ReplyI wanted to thank Jeff & Jennifer Del Bagno for the very relevant comment on this article. I have spoken to the Del Bagnos privately and hope they will see some resolution, or at least some response from Inman/APS, to the assault and ongoing bullying of their son at Inman Middle School. There are always several sides to a story, but this seems to be another example of the chasm of difference between APS "protocol" (i.e. zero tolerance bullying policies) and the reality of our students' day-to-day experience in our local schools.

Seth, as a Grady parent, I understand your frustration. I do know that we are all on the same side -- all of our children should be safe at school. There are many issues of concern with what happened at Grady and Price MS, and security procedures going forward. There is a glaring "gap" between APS protocol and GHS reality that must be addressed before we go too much farther with the metal detectors and bag checks, by teachers who are not trained or experienced as security guards. There is simply no way to secure every entrance and every building at Grady High School. We've been extremely lucky so far, but as a community, we've got to come up with better solutions. Thank you for your comment. It was odd to me, too, that Superintendent Davis did not attend the community meeting -- they never addressed his absence.

It's good to hear someone else sees that connection with The Lacuna and appreciates that glimpse of Frida & Diego. -

Thanks, Nicholas! I can hardly wait to see the exhibit -- I can really relate and connect with the art, especially Frida Kahlo's, after reading about her in The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, and then watching the movie with Salma Hayek, which was visually stunning. I am so excited to see her paintings "live" and pull it all together. (Very exciting uncrating!! ;-)

ReplyStephen, when you transitioned from Kindle to Nook, did you lose all of your Kindle books, or is there a way to transfer them? I am still struggling with REAL v. ebooks, even though I did get that new Kindle Fire for my birthday, and I like it. I still had to search out an old paperback (mass market smaller one - old school!) to read Fahrenheit 451, even though it is available on Kindle -- just didn't seem right!

ReplyWow. Young, black male criminals may be/are the problem, time and time again, for many reasons, but to blatantly turn it into white v. black in Midtown is a discredit to our very diverse community. Come on, people.
and kudos to APD and the Find My iPhone app -- that is awesome! -

ReplyI didn't know schools were scored, too. Good for Tech Hotel & Conf! Hmmm, Grady HS, 85 doesn't seem very good -- my kids eat there and we'd like an A+ health score, please.
