Getting Candler Park into "Sheep" Shape

In the battle against poison ivy and kudzu, the Friends of Candler Park bring in the sheep.

The two legged Friends of Candler Park in the last few years have done the best we can do in the battle of pesky invasive plants such as Poison Ivy, Kudzu and Privet. It is now time to call in the pros. The furry Friends of Candler Park will have only one task this fall: eat and eliminate invasive plants around the nature path in the ravine (closest to the corner of McLendon Avenue and Callan Circle). Trees Atlanta’s education and outreach program surrounding the sheep initiative is called “Have Ewe Herd?” Trees Atlanta is often faced with extensive invasive plant removal in the green spaces where it works to preserve existing tree canopy and replant young trees (learn more about invasive plants). Typically, the non-profit citizens group …

Planting Roots And Giving Back

Kirkwood gets 47 trees through Atlanta Hawks community program

The Atlanta Hawks, Philips Arena and Home Depot joined Trees Atlanta Nov. 17 to plant 47 trees in Kirkwood as part of the Hawks’ “Threes for Trees” program and the Hawks 2011 Season of Giving. Through the Atlanta Hawks’ “Threes for Trees” program, presented by Home Depot, every three-pointer made by the Hawks during the 2010-11 season resulted in a donation to Trees Atlanta. Trees Atlanta is a nationally recognized citizens group that protects and improves Atlanta's urban forest by planting, conserving and educating. Atlanta has lost 65 percent of its tree canopy since the mid-1970s. Since 1985, Trees Atlanta has planted and distributed more than 80,000 trees. The location for the planting was at the corner of Hardee Street and Mayson …

In Kudzu War, Trees Atlanta Gets Four-Legged Help

Goats deployed to Boulevard Crossing Park

by Patch Staff Trees Atlanta is bringing a herd of 50 goats from Whistlepig Farms to eat and eliminate 1.5 acres of kudzu in Boulevard Crossing Park, which is being built as part of the Atlanta BeltLine. Last year, the non-profit tree planting and conservation organization brought in a herd of 24 goats to eat kudzu and clear the way for future planting of native trees. Boulevard Crossing Park — which provides approximately 21.5 additional acres of greenspace to the public — is located just south of Grant Park near the intersections of Boulevard and Englewood Avenue. But this part of the future BeltLine is ensnared with kudzu, a non-native plant that's wreaked havoc on the native plants of the Southeast. That's where the goats come in. “…

The Give

Bring New Meaning To Your Tree Pose

Homemade Yoga and Trees Atlanta partner up for Yoga for Trees

Maria Cadena started her yoga practice, Homemade Yoga, with the intention to give back. She offers private instruction at affordable prices, and with each session booked, she donates $5 to one of three nonprofits of the client’s choice: Trees Atlanta, Barking Hound Village Rescue Foundation or One Love Generation. “Part of what pushed me to start Homemade Yoga was working with a charity,” Cadena said. “I was invited by Jennifer Lester of One Love Generation to be their live sketch yoga model. That night, a part of me that had been sleeping was awoken. What you get when you give is beyond words.” But her partnership with Trees Atlanta extends beyond donations. Every other Sunday through October, Cadena and Trees Atlanta offer Yoga for Trees…
