Zoo Atlanta's Lulu Gives Birth to Baby Lowland Gorilla

Lulu’s newborn is the 19th gorilla born at Zoo Atlanta since the opening of The Ford African Rain Forest in 1988.

GRANT PARK — Lulu, a 13-year-old western lowland gorilla at Zoo Atlanta, gave birth to an infant late in the evening on March 14. The newborn is Lulu’s first surviving offspring and the seventh for 23-year-old family leader Taz. Lulu's offspring also is a grandchild of Zoo Atlanta’s most legendary resident, the late Willie B. The newborn appears to be healthy, and Lulu has been observed nursing. Provided the new mother continues to provide appropriate maternal care, the pair may be seen in their outdoor habitat as early as Saturday, March 16. Jennifer Mickelberg, Curator of Primates says zoo officials should know the baby gorilla's sex within the next couple of days. The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams continue to monitor Lulu and …

Lulu Meets A Spoiled Rotten New Friend

Lulu discovers a boutique that caters to pampered kids — and pets.

A funny thing happened on my way to doggie daycare. Riding through Glenwood Park, I spied a new boutique called Spoiled Rotten. Owner Michele Simpson set up shop last November. Now that the weather is warming up, she enjoys a steady stream of foot traffic as shoppers flock to her assortment of colorful gear for trendy kids and pets. I found a few drool-worthy items in the boutique — located below the Enso Apartments at 880 Glenwood Ave. SE — including a blue robe that would make bath time much more tolerable. I also discoverd Cha Cha, the store’s four-legged mascot. She kindly offered a quick preview for my East Atlanta Patch readers. Lulu: Welcome to the neighborhood! Cha Cha: Thanks, Lulu. We’re really excited to be here. Mom wanted a …

Tips To Protect Your Pets' Pearly Whites

Lulu provides a few tips to help celebrate Pet Dental Health Month.

Did you know that February is Pet Dental Health Month? Mom celebrates by stuffing her face with candy hearts and chocolate bonbons, while chasing me around the house with a toothbrush. Human behavior remains a mystery to me, but I do realize that good dental hygiene is essential. Dog breath simply is not cute on anyone, whether you have two legs or four. Left unchecked, tartar buildup can lead to gum disease, costly extractions and other health issues. With that in mind, here are a few of Lulu’s Life Lessons for protecting those pearly whites. 1. Brush regularly. Pet stores stock plenty of toothbrushes and pet toothpaste made especially for pets, but a damp cloth does the trick just as well. Focus on cleaning exterior surfaces at least …

Lulu sets goals for the New Year

Lulu tries to start the new year on a positive note by paying it forward for pets.

Happy New Year, Everyone! With 2011 in my rearview mirror, I’m ready to grab life by the paws and have a really good time. Mom likes to begin each year setting goals for growth and improvement, so I gave her a list of things she could do better this year. (I want more treats, longer walks, and more belly rubs.) Those suggestions didn't go over too well. Evidently, I was supposed to set goals for myself. Since she brings home the kibble, I made the following resolutions for 2012. Upcoming pet events: Jan. 7: Cat adoption fair. If you have room for a feline addition, LifeLine Animal Project may have the fur kid for you. Visit PetSmart (875 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, Lawrenceville, Ga. 30043) all week to check out adoptable kittens and cats…

Lulu tries to earn her wings

The clock is ticking for Lulu to go from naughty to nice

Mom considers my angel Halloween costume hilarious, but I fail to find the humor. Besides, it beats the boring pumpkin outfit she picked for me. Who wants to be a pumpkin?! That’s what you eat for tummy trouble. Only babies look good dressed as pumpkins, probably because they’re still so round. But I have a reputation to protect, and nothing about that pumpkin costume reflects my personality — or life in the Lulu lane! Also, the angel outfit really helps me embrace my better half. Wearing the halo helps me think twice before causing mischief; and my white gown limits mobility. That means I have to weigh my options before chasing a cat or sneaking extra treats. Don’t want to snag my gown on anything. Plus, I heard Mom talking to the folks …
