Not So Little Anymore, Le Petit Marché Plans Expansion

When owner Marchét Sparks opened her specialty foods eatery five years ago, customers were enamoured with the gourmet breads and cheeses and other delicacies. But then the economy tanked.

KIRKWOOD — Marchet Sparks likes to pay attention to details. And she listens. The owner of Le Petit Marché (The Little Market) at the corner of Hosea L. Williams Drive and Howard Street credits those two traits with the growth that has sustained her business since opening in 2008. Now, Le Petit Marché is in hyper-expansion mode. The neighborhood eatery has outgrown its 1,100-square-foot space and plans to move later this year into a new development across the street where it will be the anchor business. The move, which Sparks expects to complete by early summer, will add some 800 square feet of additional space, allowing for 30 more additional seats, a full-size kitchen, a covered patio with outdoor seating and dedicated customer parking…

I totally understand. Just happy to see positive change in my neighborhood. The new / remodeling of the YMCA by clay street and memorial drive also is a positive. I can't wait for that portion of memorial to get the new sidewalks and streetscape as well. I was happy to see the new development at krog, but sure wish they had put it at Pullman yards. Would have been awesome to have that even closer.   more ›

Burgess-Peterson Parents Seek Solution to Art Teacher Problem

East Atlanta school — along with Toomer Elementary in Kirkwood — has been without a permanent art teacher since early October.

By now, Reid Tankersley expected his refrigerator door to be showcasing his kid's artwork from her classes at Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta. Problem is, there isn't any. Burgess-Peterson's regular art teacher is out this school year on sabbatical. An interim teacher was brought in and she split her time between Burgess-Peterson and Toomer Elementary in Kirkwood. But Tankersley and several other parents have expressed concerns to Atlanta Public Schools officials that their kids have not had any real art lessons and that supplies for those classes have gone unused. The interim art teacher then went on leave in early October. She is scheduled to return in January. APS officials say they have a solution that should please parents at…

Both Reid and Joe have spent countless hours on their community schools. The issue is with the procedures regarding teachers who are having problems coming to work and how the district ensures there are highly qualified teachers in the classroom if for some reason the regular classroom teacher can't be there. There is a huge problem with substitute teachers in APS. That's not a criticism of any …   more ›

Kirkwood's Earl Williamson Named Finalist in Cox Conserves Heroes Program

Williamson, NPU-O chaiman, recognized for environmental efforts, nets $2,500 for Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization.

Earl Williamson is a man of many hats. To some, he's the no-nonsense chairman of Neighborhood Planning Unit-O, which advocates for and represents the interests of Kirkwood, East Lake, Edgewood and the Villages of East Lake. To others, a dedicated nurse. But Williamson, a Kirkwood resident, also is passionate about conservation and keeping the greenspaces on the east side of Atlanta green and flourishing for future generationss It led to his being a co-founder of the East Side Parks Network, which focuses on those greenspaces such as Gilliam Park, which the group cleaned up. Collectively, there's about 75 acres of greenspace that thread through Kirkwood, East Lake, Edgewood and the DeKalb County community of Parkview. Through his efforts, …

Visions For Vacancies

What Should Go Here?: Pullman Yard

Surrounded by renaissance, a large swath of Kirkwood languishes.

On a recent trip through the Kirkwood neighborhood, I pulled off onto Rogers Street and headed toward DeKalb Avenue. For the 12 years I've lived in Atlanta I've always heard and read stories about the Pullman Yard, once part of a thriving enterprise that fell into bankruptcy and now is state-owned. The 100-year-old, 28-acre swath of real estate always seemed to be under "the next big thing" status. After all, Atlanta spent the final years of the 20th century and much of the first decade in the 21st under bevy of construction crane, redevelopment and renaissance. A lot of those efforts helped East Atlanta Patch neighborhoods. Glenwood Park saw its birth, while East Atlanta experienced a renaissance. Edgewood welcomed (in the end, at least) …

Kirkwood Bar & Grill: Back in Business?

Closed since Tuesday, embattled restaurant reopened Friday.

The Kirkwood Bar & Grill, which was shuttered earlier this week, is reopened — at least for now. David Johnson, the owner of the eatery which has been at the center of nearly a year-long row in Kirkwood, failed to pay back rent owed to the building owner Southeastern Properties LLC. That led to a summary judgment against him late last month — and a shutdown — at least since Tuesday of this week. On Friday night, however, the restaurant was open for business. Johnson was not immediately available for comment Friday night.

UPDATED: Kirkwood Bar & Grill: Closed

The eatery, reopened just a couple of months ago, is now closed again.

The opened-then-closed-then-reopened Kirkwood Bar & Grill is now closed again. The closure of the restaurant at 1963 Hosea L. Williams Dr. NE, follows owner David Johnson's failure to bring his lease current with Southeast Holdings LLC, which filed a lawsuit against him for back rent. In July he agreed to a series of payments on a schedule through Oct. 15 that would have brought it current, but he failed to do that leading a default judgment on Sept. 24 for the $31,000 in back rent he owed and subsequent seizure of the property. John Turpin, an Inman Park-based developer and builder and principal of Southeast Holdings, told East Atlanta Patch the property is being marketed to potential tenants. "We're really looking forward to finding the …

Toomer Elementary Celebrates International Walk to School Day

Kirkwood school's students join others across Atlanta and around the world to highlight walkability.

Scores of children and parents from Toomer Elementary School in Kirkwood walked to school Wednesday morning to highlight walkability and promote pedestrian safety. Toomer's kids joined students from other schools including, Burgess-Peterson Academy, Drew Charter School, Mary Lin and Whitefoord elementary schools in highlighting walking as part of the International Walk to School Day. Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling. The events also stress the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. For example, at the southwestern corner of Hosea L. Williams Dr. and Rogers Street, …
