Kirkwood Spring Fling Gives Barbecue Chefs a Chance to Showcase Skills

The Blue Ribbon BBQ Cook Off has more than $350 in cash prizes, trophies and bragging rights.

KIRKWOOD — Get ready to be "meat drunk." This year's Kirkwood Spring Fling & Tour of Homes will offer a special treat to barbecue lovers and those who can take a slab of pork or chicken and transform it into savory dishes. The Blue Ribbon BBQ Cook Off, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday May 11, is part of a weekend of Spring Fling events. Now in its 11th year, the Spring Fling is dedicated to celebrating all things Kirkwood and raising money to fund the Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization's initiatives for the community. The cook-off itself, the brainchild of Christian Enterkin, has more than $350 in prizes. Enterkin said barbecue is an Atlanta favorite and a festival is the perfect venue for aficionados to showcase their skills. As …

Surveillance Video Shows 2 Men Attacking Clerk at Reddy Supermarket

Police are asking for your help to find these armed robbers.

KIRKWOOD — Atlanta Police investigators are asking people to take a close look at the attached video to help identify two armed robbers seen assaulting the store clerk at Reddy Supermarket. The assault and theft netted the thieves a few hundred dollars, plus a large amount of cigarettes, along with the car of the store clerk. Police ask that if you have any information about the suspect in this video, call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404.577.TIPS (8477). Kirkwood gas and convenience store receives a facelift.

KIRKWOOD — Our Patch Pic of the Day takes us to the heart of the historic Kirkwood neighborhood where the BP station was undergoing a transformation on Thursday. Workers were spotted putting up Valero signage around the 1989 Hosea Williams Drive station at the corner of Howard Street. Based in San Antonio, Texas, Valero Energy Corp. is one of the country’s largest retail fuel operators and in the fourth quarter of 2012, it posted a profit of $1 billion, its best showing in seven years.

Suspect Sought in Reddy Supermarket Robbery and Car Theft

Police believe this man is involved in the armed robbery and beating of the owner of the Reddy Supermarket at 2199 College Ave. NE.

KIRKWOOD — The Atlanta Police Department is looking for the public's assistance in identifying the lead suspect in a Monday evening robbery at Reddy Supermarket, located at 2199 College Ave. NE. According to the APD's Facebook page, the individual in the attached photo is wanted for armed robbery and is responsible for the robbery at the convenience store.  The victim told police he was robbedin his store and that his assailant that his vehicle also was stolen. The store owner, according to the police report, said two men approached him at about 10:30 p.m. as he exited the store to bring milk to his car. The Teddy Bear Hospital Visits Furry Patients at Toomer Elementary

Students at Toomer Elementary brought their favorite stuffed bears for a check-up at The Teddy Bear Hospital.

KIRKWOOD — The medical staff of the Teddy Bear Hospital tended to the beloved furry patients of Toomer Elementary School students earlier this month and were assisted by the highly talented students themselves. Fifteen students from the Emory School of Medicine used their classroom knowledge to pose as bear doctors and perform basic medical examinations on students' teddy bears, while teaching vital lessons to the kids. "The doctors assessed the teddy bears by taking x-rays, checking their blood pressure, heart rate, and more. The children participated in the check-up by examining their eyes, giving them shots, and listening for their heartbeat," according to APS' Talk Up blog. The APS Student Spotlight: This Week from Toomer Elementary

East Atlanta Patch recognizes the accomplishments of one talented Toomer student this week.

KIRKWOOD — The Atlanta Public Schools blog, Talkup APS, has just released its Student Spotlight of the Week article in which a talented student from Toomer Elementary School was acknowledged for his recent academic accomplishments. Alex Yang, a kindergarten student at Toomer, is a bright child, "who excels in all subject areas, has artistic talents, and is also bilingual," according to the APS blog. This 6-year-old can speak both English and Mandarin. His mother was once a Chinese language teacher at Toomer, but is now teaching at North Atlanta High School. According to the blog, Alex's favorite subjects are reading and math and he himself says, “I like math because it has lots of numbers.” His teacher also is very impressed with his …

Kirkwood Bar & Grill Hit With Wage Lawsuit

Former cook alleges restaurant failed to pay him overtime.

A former cook of the Kirkwood Bar & Grill has filed a federal lawsuit against the restaurant, claiming it failed to pay him overtime money he is owed. Quentin Gibson, a Clayton County resident who worked at the restaurant from October 2012 to Dec. 21, 2012, is seeking the overtime pay, plus damages equal to that amount and attorneys' fees. Gibson filed the lawsuit Jan. 30 in the U.S. District Court's Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta. "From on or about October 2012 through December 21, 2012, Defendants willfully failed to compensate Plaintiff at an hourly rate above or equal to the minimum wage as established in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act," the complaint alleges.
