UPDATED: Fallen Tree Causes Large House Fire in Edgewood

One home was completely destroyed in the blaze while a second home was damaged extensively.

EDGEWOOD — Atlanta Fire Rescue Department crews remain on the scene of a large fire that fully engulfed a home at 241 Patterson Ave. SE on Monday. The fire, which was called in at about 11:40 a.m., was sparked by a tree that fell on power lines and then somehow created a gas leak. "It was the gas leak and the power lines that contributed to the start of the fire," Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman Marian McDaniel told East Atlanta Patch. McDaniel said the home completely "burned down and a second home received extensive damage." The persons in the second home were able to escape and no injuries were reported. Patterson Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic for several hours, but Fox 5 reported that it had been reopened in its 6 p…

NPU-O Meeting Scheduled for Jan. 22

Leadership nominations, zoning and alcohol issues on the agenda.

Neighborhood Planning Unit-OP meets tonight, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Branham Recreation Center, 2051 Delano Dr. NE. We will be nominating and electing a Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary, and an Atlanta Planning Advisory Board representative. Let me be blunt. If more do not participate and step up to lead you will be abdicating NPU-O's role representing the community and essentially giving City of Atlanta government free reign to do as they will without input or oversight from the neighborhoods it impacts. The choice is yours! Besides the usual informative Public Safety, Council, and City Department reports the following items are on the agenda for votes: Zoning (For Vote) Alcohol & Festival Permitting (For Vote) City Legislation (For Vote) …

Planting the Seeds of Success

Students from Coan Middle School and across Atlanta ready a garden for Edgewood and East Lake.

by Miranda Bryen We want to recognize students who prepared to plant a fruit orchard in a under-served community here in Atlanta, and thank you all for making this possible. On Saturday, Dec. 1 — on a day that felt like spring — a group of volunteers, students and educators worked together to revitalize the edible school yard in the Edgewood and East Lake communities. Fifteen students from Coan Middle School, Carver High School, North Atlanta High School and Sarah Smith Elementary school joined with other community volunteers to prepare unused land at Coan Middle School for its Dec. 12 fruit tree and fruit bush planting. The volunteer event, made possible by Mayson Avenue Cooperative, Coan Middle School and private foundation support, was …

Visions For Vacancies

What Should Go Here? Goodfellas Pizza

Restaurant on Moreland Avenue can't seem to stay open.

It's a head scratcher. The structure at 30 Moreland Ave. SE at the intersection of Wylie St. SE, just can't stay in business. It had been a Church's Chicken fast food outlet for a while before closing down. Then it became Goodfellas, a pizza, pasta and wings place. But that was short-lived, too. It's curious that a quick service restaurant couldn't make a go of it when Moreland is a highly trafficked state road and Wylie is fairly busy, as well. What's more, that intersection is sandwiched between two bustling neighborhoods, Edgewood and Reynoldstown. It seems, then, that it should do well as an eatery, be it a neighborhood joint or chain restaurant. So should it stay as a restaurant or become something else? What would you like to see at …

NPU-O Meeting Scheduled Tonight

On the agenda: Kirkwood Wine Stroll and impact fees ordinance revision.

by Patch Staff  Neighborhood Planning Unit-O, which includes East Lake, the Villages of East Lake, Kirkwood and Edgewood, is scheduled to meetat 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Bessie Branham Recreation Center, 2051 Delano Drive NE. Two key items up for a vote:

Dana Blankenhorn

12:16 pm on Wednesday, August 29, 2012

The NPU approved the Kirkwood Wine Stroll license and had a long discussion on the impact fees, but decided we couldn't decide on it because we really don't know what the ordinance contains. There is great resentment among small business owners over impact fees they have to pay but that big companies building in areas like the Beltline don't have to pay. Why should we subsidize them, they adk.   more ›

The incident, which took place in the 20 block of Hutchinson St. NE, occurred at about 2 a.m. Police gave the following account: The victim's husband came home from work and as he entered their home, he heard a gunshot and when he went to his bedroom, he saw his wife come through a side door, clutching her chest.
