Bring family and friends out to rediscover the largest park in East Atlanta during the Brownwood Frolic.
EAST ATLANTA — The 30316 Zip code is known for its abundance of booze and tattoos. You don’t have to go far to find a good band or bar to belly up to for the afternoon. Until you reproduce, that is. Once you have someone who can’t vote in-tow, your options for fun in the Village shrink. This fact is not lost on the East Atlanta Parents Network. It formed in 2009 and has since been the parent of seven different age-specific play groups and a number of all-ages get togethers. Now these parents are setting their sights on making Brownwood Park more a gathering place for families than a meeting place for crack deals. They are calling it Brownwood Frolic, the newest addition to the EAPN family get togethers. One Sunday a month there will be a …

Slats stolen from park benches.
Remember the old adage that if it isn't nailed down, someone will steal it? Well, in the case of a couple of benches in Brownwood Park, the slats used for seating were nailed down — and they were stolen anyway. A frequent dogwalker who uses the south portion of the park informed East Atlanta Patch of the thefts and the situation was a point of concern for residents at the June 12 meeting of the East Atlanta Community Association. Police say they are investigating and urge that anyone who may have seen anything to call them. Parks across Atlanta — including the Freedom Park Trail — have been popular with thieves, lately. Fox 5 Atlanta reported last week that thieves in search of copper have done more than $1 million in damage to park …

Brownwood Park could use a little love from more of the community
When you're young you feel like you can change the world. You listen to punk rock, okay — Don Henley — and National Public Radio and vow to always be proactive. Then you have kids, a job and laundry, you become your own charity case. A clean-room activist. Sadly, I don't really have the time or energy to change anything but diapers. However after changing up our hangout spots, I hear that ol' familiar call to action. Strolling through different parks in our area brought to my attention that the needles strewn about Brownwood Park are not commonplace. The dead grass and falling gates are not to be expected at everyone’s neighborhood park. Now I am on a mission to discover why other parks get so much more love. By love, I mean more money …

The Village Church of East Atlanta is a true neighborhood blessing
A church isn’t defined by a steeple, but its people. And it’s not about where or how long it’s been in the community, but what it does for the community. The Village Church of East Atlanta defines what a church is all about. The Presbyterian church was founded in September 2010 and holds services in the Brownwood Park Recreation Center. Pastor Matt Armstrong was previously at All Souls Fellowship in Decatur, but always had the mission of starting a new congregation. “Our philosophy was to plant neighborhood churches,” said Armstrong, who lives in East Lake. “A lot of people were suggesting East Atlanta Village as a good neighborhood. I got to know the neighborhood and just fell in love with it—the feel, the culture, the atmosphere. "What…

Project doubles the size of community garden, adds grapevine trellises
The rhythmic shwoo—fwoop, shwoo—fwoop of the shovels sliced through mounds of rich dirt. The clink-clank of pickaxes splitting concrete coincided with the whirring hum of drills boring holes in wooden posts. These were sounds filling the air Saturday morning as members of East Atlanta's Brownwood Park Community Garden, Park Pride and Turner Broadcasting employees got together to expand the garden by adding new plots. The project which doubles the garden is part of a community-giving initiative connected to the legacy of Martin Luther King. It was originally set for mid-January but the snowstorm that blanketed Atlanta nixed it until the last two week-ends.

Hey -- it's just a fact that there aren't that many places in EAV to take your kids. They're not welcome at several of the fine establishments. I get why. But still -- it's just a fact, dude. No one said previous efforts were for nothing.   more ›
