Woodruff Park Gets Children's Playground

Margaret Mitchell Square gets a facelift, too.

To celebrate the completion of two projects, the restoration of Margaret Mitchell Square and the installation of the new ATL Playground in Woodruff Park, several city leaders, including Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and AJ Robinson of Central Atlanta Progress were part of a rededication ceremony Tuesday of Margaret Mitchell Square and a new playground for children at Woodruff Park. At Margaret Mitchell Square, the city's Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program, in concert with a number of other agencies and Norfolk Southern, oversaw the restoration of its stainless steel sculptures and granite fountains. The plaza honoring the legacy of the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Gone With The Wind is located…

Letters to the Editor

Occupy Atlanta: 'We Are The New World'

The explanation behind the planned retaking of Woodruff Park

To the Editor: We have envisioned a new world. One without foreclosures, bank bailouts, war, corporate personhood, and the state-mandated murder of human beings. A world where the many thousands of homeless men and women in Atlanta do not have to sleep on the cold sidewalks of locked, empty buildings. A world where 15 million children do not die from hunger each year while every plant, grocery store and bakery throw away countless tons of food every single night. We have envisioned a world where the profit incentive is not only void, it is taboo – and the compassion for fellow being and for planet is paramount. A world where everyone shares so that everyone has enough. Many have envisioned this same world before us. Beginning on Oct. 7, at…

Occupy Atlanta Can Stay Through Nov. 7

Mayor, citing peaceful and non-violent nature of group, extends deadline

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed extended the deadline by which the Occupy Atlanta protesters have to leave Woodruff Park in Downtown to Nov. 7. The mayor had previously said they were to leave by Oct. 17. "Civil disobedience is an appropriate form of expression, provided that it is peaceful, non-violent and lawful," Reed said in a statement. "As of today, the Occupy Atlanta protesters continue to assemble in a peaceful, non-violent fashion in Robert W. Woodruff Park. Therefore, I have extended the Executive Order allowing Occupy Atlanta to remain in Woodruff Park after the park closes." The mayor stressed public safety remains a priority and that the city is "prepared to act swiftly should the situation in the park so warrant." The protesters, …

Anyone want to make a name for yourself in local news? Dig into ordinance 2-182 of the City of Atlanta municipal code. On 10/17 Mayor Reed issued Executive Order 2011-3 consecutive to 2011-2 without a ratifying vote on 2011-2 by the City Council. By doing so, Mayor Reed is circumvented the legislative intent of Section 2-182 and violated a city of Atlanta ordinance.   more ›

Occupy Atlanta Told To Leave Woodruff Park

Group will have to leave by Monday

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is expected to issue an order at 5 p.m. Wednesday ordering Occupy Atlanta to leave Woodruff Park in Downtown by Monday. "Mayor Reed plans to issue an Executive Order at 5 p.m. today allowing the protesters to remain in the park for 5 days," his spokeswoman, Sonji Jacobs, said in an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch. Occupy Atlanta did not immediately answer an e-mail request for comment. The group, which has been encamped in Woodruff Park since the evening of Oct. 7, is part of the national Occupy Wall St. movement, which aims to battle what is sees as corporate corruption and goverment failure among several other issues. Occupy Atlanta's original permit  allowed them to stay in the park, which the group renamed Troy …

Ed: I've been there several times and they've been nothing but peaceful. But city codes has a permitting process for large assemblies in public spaces. Personally, I think the reason why they've been left alone is because no one really cares about Woodruff Park. The bigger tourist draw is Centennial. Plus, Downtown isn't the financial hub of the city: Midtown has the Fed and Buckhead has the …   more ›
