To celebrate the completion of two projects, the restoration of Margaret Mitchell Square and the installation of the new ATL Playground in Woodruff Park, several city leaders, including Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and AJ Robinson of Central Atlanta Progress were part of a rededication ceremony Tuesday of Margaret Mitchell Square and a new playground for children at Woodruff Park. At Margaret Mitchell Square, the city's Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program, in concert with a number of other agencies and Norfolk Southern, oversaw the restoration of its stainless steel sculptures and granite fountains. To the Editor: We have envisioned a new world. One without foreclosures, bank bailouts, war, corporate personhood, and the state-mandated murder of human beings. A world where the many thousands of homeless men and women in Atlanta do not have to sleep on the cold sidewalks of locked, empty buildings. A world where 15 million children do not die from hunger each year while every plant, grocery store and bakery throw away countless tons of food every single night. Mayor, citing peaceful and non-violent nature of group, extends deadline
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed extended the deadline by which the Occupy Atlanta protesters have to leave Woodruff Park in Downtown to Nov. 7. The mayor had previously said they were to leave by Oct. 17. "Civil disobedience is an appropriate form of expression, provided that it is peaceful, non-violent and lawful," Reed said in a statement. "As of today, the Occupy Atlanta protesters continue to assemble in a peaceful, non-violent fashion in Robert W. Woodruff Park. Therefore, I have extended the Executive Order allowing Occupy Atlanta to remain in Woodruff Park after the park closes." Group will have to leave by Monday
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is expected to issue an order at 5 p.m. Wednesday ordering Occupy Atlanta to leave Woodruff Park in Downtown by Monday. "Mayor Reed plans to issue an Executive Order at 5 p.m. today allowing the protesters to remain in the park for 5 days," his spokeswoman, Sonji Jacobs, said in an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch. Occupy Atlanta did not immediately answer an e-mail request for comment. The group, which has been encamped in Woodruff Park since the evening of Oct. 7, is part of the national Occupy Wall St. movement, which aims to battle what is sees as corporate corruption and goverment failure among several other issues.
