Wells Fargo Honors East Atlanta Patch Area Organizations

Bank awards $1,000 to 13 groups.

by Patch Staff Wells Fargo & Co. awarded 63 groups — including 13 from East Atlanta and Virginia-Highland patches — $1,000 Days of Giving grants Thursday at a Duluth community breakfast. The bank's Days of Giving initiative, launched four years ago, has awarded more than $1 million in such grants statewide to date. The east Atlanta area groups honored through the program were: San Francisco-based Wells Fargo also announced that it is encouraging all the groups honored  — and others — to take part in Georgia Gives Day. That is a statewide campaign to encourage people throughout Georgia to support nonprofits, climaxing in a 24-hour statewide giving event on Dec. 6, 2012. Wells Fargo's Corporate (Community) Dividends

Wells Fargo gives $1,000 grants to 234 charities and community groups in Atlanta

Since bringing its retail banking to the Atlanta market three years ago, Wells Fargo & Co. has sought to carve out a niche as a community bank in spite of being the nation's fourth-largest financial institution. As part of that effort, the San Francisco-based bank looks to identify those organizations and groups that are dedicated to Atlanta's many neighborhoods and needs. On Wednesday, the bank held its third-annual "Days of Giving" initiative at Trees Atlanta, which recognizes those groups and the work they do. The bank has identified 234 such non-profit groups throughout Atlanta and will present each with a check for $1,000 in a series of five community breakfasts around metro Atlanta. Bank of America's decision sparks consumer outrage and online petition

For years, the big banks have touted the ease and convenience of ATM cards. And Americans who already were on the plastic habit have gradually increased their use of debit vs. checks and credit cards. But since banks were hard hit from the Great Recession, the big boys have been looking at different ways to get more green from consumers' wallets. They also are looking in to replace a collective billions in income they stand to lose as the result of new bank regulations that limit how much they may charge merchants to process card transactions.
