Summerhill Forms Friends of Phoenix Parks

Group to tackle flooding issues, increase usage of greenspace.

SUMMERHILL — The neighborhood's signature greenspace, Phoenix Park, is getting a community boost. The neighborhood has formed the Friends of Phoenix Parks to advocate for and to work for improvements at the 11.3-acre site. The Organized Neighbors of Summerhill has partnered with Park Pride to form the "Friends of"  group, joining other neighborhoods such as Candler Park, East Atlanta and Old Fourth Ward which have formed their own associations around their park spaces. ONS leaders discussed the initiative Monday at the neighborhood's monthly meeting. Police Arrest "Ptosis," Suspected Summerhill Graffiti Tagger

Zachary Kahn faces four felony and six misdemeanor charges.

Atlanta police said Friday they arrested a man they say is responsible for a string of graffiti taggings along Georgia Avenue in Summerhill. Zachary Kahn, 21, was arrested Dec. 27 on four felony and six misdemeanor arrests. Kahn, who, according to the police, tags under the name "ptosis," is responsible for more than 100 instances of vandalism in Fulton and DeKalb counties. Brad Etterle, the Atlanta Police Department’s graffiti abatement officer, arrested Kahn after tying him to several acts of vandalism. That investigation linked Kahn to the tag "ptosis," a Greek word referring to the drooping or falling of the eyelid. The Summerhill taggings were all on Georgia Avenue and Reed Street: All of the Summerhill properties are owned by the …

Changes in Impact Fees for Summerhill and Peoplestown from Braves' Parking Money

Changes made to open up funds to more neighborhood development and improvement projects.

The SMP Community Inc. fund, which was created to mitigate the impact of the 1996 Oylmpic Games on the Summerhill, Peoplestown and Mechanicsville communities, is changing how it allocates money to those neighborhoods. The non-profit fund, which is administered by the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority, gets its revenue via an eight-percent cut of the parking fees collected at the Turner Field lots. Up until now, the funds have been dispersed 50-50, with the neighborhoods' three community development groups — the Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corp., the SUMMECH Community Development Corp. and the Peoplestown Revitalization Corp. — getting half of the monies generated in a year for economic improvements. The other half goes to …

UPDATED: APS Board Of Ed Votes To Rezone Summerhill To Parkside Elementary

But board fails to take action on Custer/McDonough/Guice, which remains the only neighborhood split-zoned to two grammar schools.

The Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education — following more than an hour of discussion from the public and board members — voted Monday to rezone Summerhill to Parkside Elementary in Grant Park. The decision — Nancy Meister, who represents Buckhead Patch schools, was the lone dissenting vote — avoids a lawsuit Summerhill residents threatened to file against APS. Meister, a real estate agent, did not directly explain her no vote. But in an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch, she said she does support D.H. Stanton Elementary, the school Summerhill was slated to attend. "I believe that with support from the system and community D.H. Stanton will be a great school for all children. The residents of the Peoplestown community are dedicated to …

APS Redistricting: Summerhill And Peoplestown Need To Work Together

Communities should have the same goal: creating an educational foundation for success in all children.

by Micah A. Rowland Greetings to all our neighbors: As we approach the final hour and come closer to finalization for our Atlanta Public Schools redistricting maps, I would hope that we could come to solidarity as a unified community in reaching our victory. We will all find that living together in a community builds strong relationships and friendships that I hope will last and live with us for an entire lifetime. Now that the time is upon us, it is time to lay down our different viewpoints and work together to bring our dreams to fruition. Let this be our time, our opportunity to find common ground and take the first step in building a lasting relationship across community boundaries. It’s important as we move forward through APS for a …

Micah: Respectfully, I know that your role is to advocate for NPU-V, but communities ties are built in many ways other than through NPU. For example, both of these communities have been extremely vocal in their desire to attend both middle and high school in NPU-W, rather than being zoned to other closer schools. From a community development perspective, DHS & Parks differ. DHS was never at risk …   more ›
