Residents, parents and of course, kids celebrate new, children's play area.
INMAN PARK — After years of planning and intense fundraisers, it came down to this: The "snip-snip" of a pair of scissors, applause and the pitter-patter of pint-sized feet and children's laughter. On Saturday, residents of the neighborhood held a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony to offically open the new playground in Springvale Park. The equipment and its installation in late January, followed roughly $104,000, that the playyground committtee raised, including grants of $20,000 from the city and $47,000 from Park Pride. City, neighborhood organizations recognized at the dedication included the City of Atlanta Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, Park Pride and the Inman Park Neighborhood Association. Local businesses …

Some know him as Santa; others as Father Christmas. (We called him Père Noël.) Whatever you call him, the jolly old man in the red suit will be in Inman Park this weekend to help raise funds for the new playground project in Springvale Park. Hosted by the Springvale Park Playground Committee, the second annual Santa in the Park is scheduled for Dec. 2, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Kids (big kids, too) and pets can take pictures with Santa. Pictures will cost $15 per pose and all proceeds will go toward the new planned playground for Springvale Park. The Inman Park community has held a series of fundraising efforts for the playground, with a goal $104,000 to cover the purchase of equipment and installation, slated for next year. Park Pride, which …

Proceeds to go to $100K playground project.
The Springvale Park Playground Committee is hosting "Playground Palooza" Sept. 21 to raise money toward the new Springvale Park children's playground. The new play area, with a construction start date of spring 2013, is expected to cost about $100,000, committee members Amy Higgins and Eric Goldberg said at the Aug. 15 meeting of the Inman Park Neighborhood Association. The committee has received roughly 75 percent of that amount in donations and commitments, leaving it with just $25,000 needed to reach its goal. So Playground Palooza is one effort to raise those remaining funds. The project is part of a larger master plan for Springvale Park, which dates back to the 1890s. The park is bounded by Edgewood and Waverly avenues to the south, …

Public invited to give feedback on preliminary playground ideas.
The Springvale Park Playground Committee is holding a design day workshop today beginning at 10 a.m. at the Marianna, 292 Moreland Ave. NE. The workshop concerns the planned new playground and participants will be asked to review three preliminary designs that have been submitted and share their ideas. The $85,000 project is part of a larger master plan for Springvale Park, Amy Higgins, who is chairwoman of the Springvale Park Committee told East Atlanta Patch. The park, which dates back to the 1890s, is bounded by Edgewood and Waverly avenues to the south, west and north, and abuts homes on Elizabeth Street to the east. The playground efforts include replacing playground equipment and a redesign for more efficient use of the space, she …

Inman Park kiddies enjoyed themselves recently to a good ol' fashioned Easter Egg Hunt in Springvale Park. Aside from giving the children a little bit of fun, the hunt served as a fundraiser for the playground at the park. The Springvale Park Playground Committee raised about $1,200 for ongoing efforts.

by Cameron McCaa Join me in expressing thanks to Cora Watson and Kedish Williams for organizing the delivery and spreading of mulch along the northwest aspect of Springvale Park. They had several loads of much brought in and had a crew in the park for a day and a half with no cost to IPNA. This was especially helpful as we, like every other neighborhood committee, have a reduced budget for 2012. They have lots of greenspaces they can divert time and resources toward and I'm sure any words of appreciation from Inman Park residents would be appreciated and remembered by them. Mr. McCaa, a principal of Your Intown Home Property Management, is the Inman Park Neighborhood Association's Springvale Park Committee Chairman.

Inman Park resident Eleanor "Mother Goose" Matthews led the charge recently to save Lucy, a domesticated goose from attack by Canada Geese coming to the lake in Springvale Park. Those efforts at keeping the Canada Geese away, via a floating replica alligator, did not achieve the desired result. Undeterred, Matthews shared "Plan B" with her Inman Park neighbors on the community's listserv and with East Atlanta Patch: Yes, the Canada Goose Couple is still at Lucy's Pond but let me tell you that I have received a lot of e-mail from the Patch story that has enlightened me. First, that you cannot expect to put a domestic bird (i.e. Lucy) in a pond where there are wild birds (i.e. geese from the north). The domestic bird would have to have its …

The tale of Eleanor Matthews, a plastic alligator and Lucy, the beloved goose of Springvale Park.
Editor's note: At Patch, we're all about what's local. As part of that, we have a regular feature, along with our sister website, Huffington Post, called the "Greatest Person of the Day." These stories and vignettes serve to highlight those in our communities doing things — some big, some small — that leave our corner of the world just a little bit brighter. Today we highlight Eleanor Matthews, affectionately known as "Mother Goose." Once upon a time, in a neighborhood not so far away, there lived a goose named Lucy. Actually, Lucy still calls Inman Park home and resides in the lake there in Springvale Park. And this once-grim tale has somewhat of a happy ending. How Lucy got there and how she managed to survive a couple of rough bumps is …

Inman Park neighbors join forces to protect a beloved goose named Lucy.
If there's one thing you can say about Inman Park residents, it's that they take care of one another. And that goes for their fine-feathered friends, too. Lucy, a beloved goose who's called Springvale Park home for the last couple of years, is a neighborhood favorite. But last year, a flock of Canada Geese took up temporary residence in the lake at Springvale Park attacked poor Lucy — an Embden Goose — and drove her out of the park. So some residents, led by Eleanor Matthews — herself a Canadian — took up the cause to nurse Lucy back to health and giver her some muscle for protection. Hence: the floating plastic alligator head, which they launched Sunday afternoon. The hope is that the gator head will scare off the Canada Geese.

I have no doubt that there are some parents South of Dekalb who get some use out of those public parks, but the fact remains that very many parents utilize private institutions for pursuit of the Easter Egg. The only way to get these parents to utilize the public parks in their own neighborhood is to force those Lin families to hunt their eggs at Coan. While this story is about the Inman Park egg…   more ›
