OLD FOURTH WARD — Atlanta police detectives are still piecing together events that led to a shooting during the early morning hours on Monday outside of the Savannah Midtown Apartments on North Avenue. Sgt. Gregory Lyon told East Atlanta Patch that "preliminary information is that a 23-year-old male was invited to a party at the location, 215 North Ave." Lyon said the individual was injured by a gunshot wound to the head. "On arrival, he encountered a male with whom he had been having an ongoing dispute. The victim told investigators he left the party, but was followed by that individual and several other males," Lyon said. Apparently a scuffle may have occurred outside in the parking deck. Atlanta Public Schools investigation shows they were inoperable.
An Atlanta Public Schools investigation of the metal detectors at Price Middle School following a Jan. 31 shooting of a student shows they weren't working. In fact, in a statement released late Friday night, the district said the detectors at the Historic South Atlanta school have not been used much this current school year. APS said that one of the two metal detectors is now functioning and that the other is expected to be operational next week. Students in attendance Friday passed through that metal detector and they were scanned with security wands, the district said in its statement. Atlanta police were responding to a 911 call concerning illegal gambling in Old Fourth Ward when “at least 20 shots were fired” during the incident in which two men in their 20s were hit.
OLD FOURTH WARD — One man is dead and another is in critical condition following a barrage of bullets at the North Plaza strip center near the intersection of North Avenue and Boulevard late Monday evening. "Zone 6 officers responded to a gambling call at 628 Boulevard NE. When the officers arrived on scene they heard gunshots from the direction of 455 North Avenue," Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said. OLD FOURTH WARD — Atlanta police have made an arrest in the Aug. 19, 2012 shooting death of a Decatur man in the Bedford-Pine section, near Central Park. Jeremy S. Woods, 24, was arrested in Aiken, S.C. on Jan. 3 and is now in the Fulton County Jail. He is charged with: Police responded to a number of "shots fired" calls near Central Park at 3:50 a.m. on the day of the shooting. Officers found Kentavious Ballard, 30, laying in the grass in the 400 block of Merritts Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police say their preliminary investigation found a possible verbal argument between two groups of individuals led to the shooting.

Second suspect arrested and charged with felony murder.
Atlanta police arrested a man following the Christmas Eve shooting death of another man in a botched robbery attempt. Officials charged Roderick Banks, 22, with armed robbery and felony murder. The victim was accosted in the 20 block of Jackson Street in the Sweet Auburn disctrict sometime after 10 p.m. Police said that Banks and the deceased man tried to rob the would-be victim, who pulled out his gun and shot one of his attackers. Banks, whose prior arrests include child battery, robbery and cruelty to children, then drove the wounded attacker to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was arrested and charged in the shooting death. Police have not released the name of the deceased man, because his family had not yet been notified.

A day after Mayor Kasim Reed joined more than 750 mayors across the country in signing a letter that urged President Barack Obama to push for change in national gun laws, the city was beset by three separate shootings that left one victim dead. The shootings, which occured in the span of two hours, hit the southwest, southeast and northwest quadrants of the city and is sure to fuel the local debate over gun access and firearms control with the Newtown, Conn. massacre still freshly seared in the national consciousness. Atlanta police arrested a man in Historic Fourth Ward Skate Park Thursday night after he attempted to rob another man responding to a bogus ad on Craigslist. Michael Lee Willis Jr., 18, was arrested and charged with armed robbery in the incident, which occurred after 7 p.m. He remains in jail. Police gave the following account: The victim, 33, responded to a Craigslist post about an iPhone 5 for sale. Both men agreed to meet at the park off 650 Willoughby Way NE. At the meeting, Willis pulled out a .380-caliber pistol and ordered the victim to give up his mobile phone and cash. A man leaving the 97 Estoria bar was shot in the abdomen early Friday morning as he was entering his vehicle, Atlanta police said. It's not immediately clear what sparked the shooting, which occurred around 3 a.m. The victim is a local musician, Daniel Scoggins, who is known as "Cousin Dan." Scoggins, who was taken to the Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, was later released. In an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch, he said he is fine, considering the circumstances. One man is charged with murder in the July 26 shooting death of David McReynolds.
It was a case that left Grant Park rattled. Not just because of the brazen manner in which David McReynolds was shot in the chest on Hill Street on July 26. But because it seemed so senseless, random and heinously cruel to leave a man to die in the street on an otherwise ordinary Thursday afternoon. On Monday, Atlanta police announced investigators have made an arrest in the case: Andre Juvell Byrd, 22, is charged with murder. He was arrested Oct. 16, but it's not clear why police only made that public now. An Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman told East Atlanta Patch Monday the case is still under investigation and no other information was immediately available.
