In response to: Did Gay Slur Spark Stabbings?

Saturday, January 5
Dear Editor: I did not go to that party [Did Gay Slur Spark Stabbings? - Jan. 2, 2013], however I know the hosts and lots of people that were there. I feel that it is safe to say that there was no gay hatred among anyone I would know that would be at that party. Some of the residents perform drag at Mary's for God's sake. I wouldn't characterize this as a homophobic party to say the least. Yes, it is Reynoldstown. I live in Reynoldstown. I don't think we deserve to be characterized as a gay-hating community. This is one of the more progressive areas of Atlanta. I feel that the Patch should revisit this story later and clarify some facts and reports. — Ian Thompson, Reynoldsotown

Victim was texting in her car when gunmen pounced, pushed and struck her.
Atlanta police are looking for four men who robbed a woman late Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Home Grown restaurant on Memorial Drive. The victim told police she was parked in the restaurant's lot at the corner of Memorial and Gibson Street SE at about 10 p.m. She said was in the middle of texting when a van suddenly pulled up alongside her 2005 black Honda Civic (license plate No. BIN6013). Four men in their late teens jumped out of the van. One of them, armed with a silver handgun, called her derogatory name, pushed and hit her. He snatched her mobile phone and car keys. The victim said it was too dark to get good descriptions of her assailants, but a witness who heard the woman's screams, told police he saw one of the men get …

17th annual festival is Sept. 8 at Lang-Carson Park.
The wheelbarrow. A ubiquitous instrument found at construction sites, it's the quintessential tool symbolizing building and creation. It's fitting then that it is the symbol of the 17th Annual Wheelbarrow Festival in Reynoldstown at Lang-Carson Park this Saturday, Sept. 8. The festival, which features a 5K run and health fair, music, food and a juried artists' market, is the neighborhood's annual block party designed to showcase the Reynoldstown community, which was originally settled by newly freed slaves after the end of the Civil War. But more importantly, it's a chance for neighborhood residents to meet each other and strengthen community bonds, said Will Moore, festival co-chairman and board member of the Reynoldstown Civic …

Lover of flowers, Velma Hamilton is the rose of Reynoldstown.

by Jeffrey Landers If I could name a neighbor of the year, it would be my across-the-street neighbor, Mrs. Velma Hamilton or, as we Hawthornites like to call her, Mrs. V. for short. As an Reynoldstowner since the 1950s, she loves to work outside in the yard, almost everyday, no matter the weather. She also loves flowers — any and all kinds, especially roses. When she expressed displeasure about how the corner of our street was looking all ragged and overgrown, she and I made a date to work on it over the course of several weeks. Yesterday, Aug. 20, was the first workday and we got tons done. Take a look for yourselves as you pass Walthall and Hawthorne streets near the MARTA station. We trimmed the trees near the corner, weeded the …

Living Walls project creates mural at intersection of Fulton Terrace and Holtzclaw Street.
Check out the corner of Holtzclaw Street and Fulton Terrace in Reynoldstown to see the latest Living Walls transformation. Sarah Emerson, one of the artists Living Walls picked to bring an Atlanta intersection to life. Emerson, of Roswell, said Monica Campana, one of Living Walls' organizers, gave her the Reynoldstown site because it matches her style. "It would fit into the subject matter of my work because the walls are cave-like and carved out of the ground," Emerson told East Atlanta Patch. "Conceptually, I was so excited about the location, I have always been interested in the landscape and how it is transformed by natural phenomenon and human intervention."

If the original story it mentioned that this man had been openly ridiculed all night leading up to the attack. I'm kind of curious why the folks doing the tormenting were allowed to stay at the party. Why were they not asked to leave or have the police come get them out before this incident. If you're hosting a party aren't you at some level responsible for the behavior of the guests in your …   more ›
