If you want, Dana, I'm sure EAVers would only be too happy to post signs at the usual illegal dumping grounds in East ATL redirecting folks to Kirkwood. But then Earl Willamson would kill me. :-)   more ›

Puppy Powerpack

This little doggie gets carried about.

REYNOLDSTOWN — During warm months, the dog park at Parkgrounds Coffeeshop is a haven for man' best friends. Most of them come to and fro the old-fashioned way: They're walked on a leash. But LE (pronounced Ellie) is carried about in style, via backpack. It's a dog's life.

Patch Voices

Is it Time for a 'Friends of Lang-Carson Park?'

Lang-Carson is at the heart of Reynoldstown, but its current state doesn't reflect the renaissance taking place in the neighborhood that surrounds it.

by Jeffrey Landers In living here as long as I have, I have seen the neighborhood change slowly from mainly older folks 13 years ago — when I moved here — to single homeowners to young couples to young families with small children. It has been a very pleasant development to see this gradual shift back to a much more family cohesive community than the one I moved into more than a decade ago. In noticing this demographic shift, I have also realized that the park at the center of our neighborhood has fallen behind in it's ability to be used efficiently and effectively by my Reynoldstown neighbors and friends...It seems a little functionally obsolete and unloved these days as compared to the awesome Cabbagetown Park and what will be a more …

Business Inc.

For Some, Business Success Means Reinvention

After several years in the real estate business, a former buyer's agent finds new success in another industry.

REYNOLDSTOWN — Success in business means adapting. It means change. And sometimes it means reinventing yourself. That's what Johnny Gianoulidis, owner of the Parkgrounds Café, a coffee, breakfast and sandwich shop that caters to java lovers and their dogs. Gianoulidis, 48, spent five years in the real estate business, three of which were great. But the last two years weren't. A buyer's agent, meaning he represented those looking to purchase homes, he saw business trickle as the Great Recession, which began in 2007, wreaked its havoc on the economy. A native New Englander, he could have gone into the lucrative side of real estate and represent the banks in foreclosures and short sales, which were aplenty. But Gianoulidis, who will soon open…

Friends Meet, Voice Support For Luke O'Donovan

Support Luke Defense Committee gather in solidarity for their friend and take a stand against homophobia.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS — In a symbolic show of unity and to take a stand against at what they say is homophobia, more than two dozen friends and supporters of Luke Patrick O'Donovan met Sunday evening in a "town hall" meeting to support their incarcerated friend. O'Donovan, 19, remains in police custody following a New Year's Eve stabbing incident in Reynoldstown that left six people — including himself — injured with stab wounds. He is charged with five counts of aggravated assault. The victims have said the stabbings followed an argument they had with O'Donovan at the party. But his friends, who formed the Support Luke Defense Committee that met at the Little Five Points Community Center, dispute that account. They say he was the victim of …

Hilary, you haven't been paying attention to this, I can tell. The claim isn't that O'Donovan attacked people who were calling him homophobic slurs. The claim is that they called him homophobic slurs, then jumped him, then stabbed him, and then he defended himself, ran away, and was arrested at the hospital. I'm sorry but if O'Donovan would've waited till the cops came, it sounds like he would've…   more ›

Atlanta Habitat's $12 Million Move to Reynoldstown

Agency renovating foreclosed site for new headquarters.

For years, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity has been based in Grant Park. The agency helps put families into their own homes that they, along with the help of volunteers and home-building professionals construct. But Atlanta Habitat, which has built some 1,200 homes across Atlanta and surrounding Fulton County since its founding in 1983, hasn't had a home of its own. (Atlanta Habitat is a separate affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which has its operational headquarters in Americus and administrative offices in Downtown.) It has outgrown its current rented headquarters at 519 Memorial Drive, necessitating a push for new digs. The current lease expires at the end 2014. It explains the agency's $12 million campaign that includes …

Visions For Vacancies

What Should Go Here?: Tech High School

Charter school closed last year. Should Atlanta Public Schools keep it or sell it for redevelopment?

REYNOLDSTOWN — Last year's closure of Tech High School at 1043 Memorial Drive SE added yet another vacant Atlanta Public School building to the city's list of empty properties. APS had already closed several schools last year following the redistricting drama that gripped the district last year, including Cook Elementary in Capitol Gateway and East Lake Elementary. APS officials have explored alternative uses for Cook and East Lake Elementary is the temporary home of Coan Middle School students. Tech's closure wasn't redistricting-related, but school officials said it APS' funding formula for public charters, which a judge ruled illegal, was a factor in the decision to shutter operations. So now the building, which some former Tech …
