Atlanta police officials released a sketch of the man believed to have attempted to kidnap a 12-year-old Lake Claire girl as she walked home from school. The March 12 incident occurred around 4:10 p.m. near the intersection of Connecticut and New York avenues. APS Redistricting: Lake Claire Supports Option A

'Keeping Mary Lin K-5 is investing in success.'

Editor's note: This is the official position statement of Lake Claire Neighbors in response to the Options A & B currently being reviewed by the Atlanta Public Schools administration and parents. We, the Lake Claire community, thank the demographers, Board of Education, and APS administration for listening to many of the concerns raised by APS communities about the redistricting process. While Option A clearly does not answer the concerns of all communities, we support elements of this option and prefer it to Option B for the reasons set forth below. In a spirit of ongoing dialog, we ask that you continue to invest in the success of the Mary Lin, Inman, and Grady communities by: a) Keeping Mary Lin K-5; b) Providing the SPLOST-funded …

APS Redistricting: Kirkwood Rejects Options A & B

Keep Kirkwood together at Toomer Elementary, bring East Lake's children to Toomer if their school closes and bring Mary Lin Elementary to Coan Middle School.

The Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization, which represents the interests of that community, voted last week on a response to the demographers' two options with respect to the current preliminary plans parents and district officials are reviewing. Under Option A: all of Kirkwood would be zoned for Toomer Elementary, Coan Middle and Jackson High schools. Under Option B: The neighborhood is split. Half of Kirkwood is zoned for Toomer Elementary, Inman Middle and Grady High schools. The other is zoned for Burgess-Peterson Academy and Coan Middle and Jackson High schools or Whitefoord Elementary, Coan Middle and Jackson High schools. KNO, in it's 5-page position statement response to the options, says neither is acceptable and expresses the desire …

A Conversation With. . .

APS Redistricting: Mary Lin's SPLOST Expansion Was Never Guaranteed

Expansion projects, like the one Mary Lin Elementary community has been expecting through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes, are not guaranteed.

Candler Park's Mary Lin Elementary School has waited a long time for an expansion to the campus that parents believed they were promised. They believed by voting to approve a specific schools tax — called Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes — they'd get the funds needed to pay for a physical expansion to the school, which has been overcrowded for years. But in a wide-ranging interview between Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr. and Patch, the superintendent said SPLOST funds are not guaranteed to any project. "Promises were not made in SPLOST," Davis told Patch. "They were indicators of what we would spend the money for if we had the money." The issue is in focus for Mary Lin, which also serves Inman Park and …

APS Redistricting: Childrens' Safety Is Paramount In Walking To School

Two Candler Park fathers say DeKalb Avenue is dangerous barrier for children.

Being able to walk to one's neighborhood school and to do so safely is one factor parents consider in deciding where to live and which school his or her child will attend. Parents in Candler Park, who are zoned to Mary Lin Elementary, say they have grave concerns about one of the proposals they and others whose children attend Atlanta Public Schools are reviewing regarding a massive rezoning of schools in the district. The proposal of concern is the one that would combine Mary Lin — which is in Candler Park and also serves children from Inman Park and Lake Claire — and Toomer Elementary in Kirkwood. The schools essentially would become two campuses, with one campus serving the kindergarten and first grade classes. The other campus would …

Peralte, if you want an example of kids not walking Dekalb b/c of danger, the kids for Inman condos get off on Haralson Ave. and walk through our abandoned lot to get home. I started leaving the gate unlocked near my front door so that they (and the bus driver) wouldn't have to deal with that split at Dekalb.   more ›

Zip code in focus: 30307

With Sunday being Christmas, there won't be any open houses. So in this week's Home $weet Home we look at foreclosures in the Candler Park and Lake Claire neighborhoods. Though all neighborhoods in East Atlanta Patch have been hit by the dowturn in the economy and the housing market, these two communities have fared better than others, with just three between them.

Honda Accord Stolen From Lake Claire Neighborhood

Third incident involving a Honda in Lake Claire in the latest in two weeks

People love their Hondas. So do thieves. Someone stole a black 1997 Honda Civic wagon overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning from a Delaware Avenue NE home in Lake Claire. There were no valuables left in view other than the stereo faceplate, the victims told East Atlanta Patch,  but an iPod was in the glove compartment. They also reported no broken glass around the spot where they parked their car, but the victims found  several, small plastic/rubber pieces of the car trim on the ground. The theft comes nearly a week after two other Hondas in Lake Claire were vandalized. In those cases, both Hondas — a white 1991 Accord and green 1997 Civic — were on nearby Leonardo Avenue. The white Accord was broken into but nothing was taken. In the …

Hondas Vandalized In Lake Claire

(Good reminder to keep valuables and other important papers out of sight or take them with you)

Two older Hondas' small, rear passenger side panel windows were broken into Friday night in Lake Claire. Both break-ins occurred in the 400 block of Leonardo Avenue between McClendon Avenue NE and Marlbrook Drive NE, according to a crime report on the Lake Claire neighborhood listserv. In the first Honda, a white 1991 Accord, the vandal or vandals broke in, but appeared to have left the items in the car undisturbed. But  in the second vehicle, a green 1997 Civic, the thieves took jumper cables and a tire inflation pump. It seems the burglar or burglars had a penchant just for Japanese autos. A German automobile, a Volkswagon Beetle parked between the two Hondas, was left untouched, according to the report.
