A number of student-made films created by pupils of Jackson High School will be screened at the school Thursday, May 16 at the school, 1550 Hosea L. Williams Drive. You can also vote for the best film among the seven in contention. Thursday's screenings will be followed by an awards ceremony at the school on Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, picks 1,000 students every year who receive scholarships to use at a university or college of their choice.
Fourteen high school students from Atlanta Public Schools, including two from Jackson High School, were named Gates Millennium Scholars. The Jackson students named were Divine Butts and Bulmaro Espericueta. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, picks 1,000 students every year who receive scholarships to use at a university or college of their choice. Atlanta Public Schools has just released a list of projects that will affect schools in the 2013-2014 school year.
Coan Middle School and Jackson High School are two local schools in the Atlanta Public Schools system that have already been affected by renovation projects, and they will continue to be in the upcoming 2013-14 school year, according to the TalkUp APS blog. TalkUp APS created a full list of schools that will have renovation and construction work done in the next school year, which includes mostly middle schools but also a few high and elementary institutions. EAST ATLANTA — The teachers at Burgess-Peterson Academy seek funding to support the classroom projects they've designed for their students. The teachers are raising funds through Donors Choose, which allows those wishing to contribute to give whatever amount they want and get an understanding of how the funds will be utilized. Tytsie Jackson, the kindergarten teacher at Burgess-Peterson, seeks an iPad for her class. Cecil Houston: A legacy remembered.
Cecil Houston was more than a band instructor. He was a mentor. He was a counselor. He was the rare soul every parent hopes will touch the life of his or her child in school. Not only because he was a dedicated teacher, but because he also taught them and guided them through those life lessons that would make those children grow into solid, productive adults. Mr. Houston, 36, was the band leader at Jackson High School. He died Dec. 30 after collapsing at a friend's home. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Fantara; four sons, Cecil III, 10; Christian, 9; Cahron, 6, and Colin, 5. He also is survived by his parents, Cecil Houston Sr. and Loretta Houston, and three sisters, Ramona, Rhonda and Rhesa Houston. A native of Brownwood, Texas, …

Cecil Houston, the beloved band leader at Jackson High School, passed away this week. The 36-year-old is survived by his wife and children. "The 5th Quarter" — the Wake — will be held at Clark Atlanta University's Cornelius L. Henderson Student Center at the corner of James P. Brawley Dr. SW and Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard, on Monday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. The Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 4245 Cascade Road SW.
