Having turned-around two Clayton County schools, Stephanie Johnson was brought in this year to shake things up at Jackson High School and transform its culture and academic standing.
KIRKWOOD — The data room spells everything out. In a scant few minutes, visitors can see how students at Jackson High School are performing in their classes and on standardized tests. They also get a good understanding of which teachers are performing well, which ones aren't and anomalies between students' test scores in the classroom compared with standardized exams. For Stephanie Johnson, the principal Atlanta Public Schools hired last fall to lead Jackson's turn-around, the data culled allows her and her team to focus on the many challenges facing the high school and to address them in a systematic way. Johnson arrival comes at a critical juncture for the school named after Maynard Jackson, the late Atlanta mayor. The school's campus in…

'Those, like me, who have been here for decades remember when couples who had children had to move when a kid turned four, because they had to live in an area that had good, decent schools.'
Another meeting? Although I go to a lot of 'em — SAND, NPU, PTSA, LSC, etc. etc. etc. — I am not a "meetings" person. I rarely see the significance, certainly not the amount of time spent talking rather than doing, although I understand communicating and planning are important. That said, there is an incredibly important 7 p.m. meeting coming up Thursday, March 21, at Maynard H. Jackson High School (at the temporary location: Coan Middle School, 1550 Hosea Williams Drive), organized by the Southeast Communities for Schools (http://seacs.weebly.com/): "SEACS is delighted to announce a very special meeting. Join us as Jackson's visionary new principal Stephanie Johnson gives her vision for the future. This meeting is for anyone whose child …

Maynard Jackson High's Academy of Engineering gets $5,000 grant from AT&T.
EAST ATLANTA — The teachers at Burgess-Peterson Academy seek funding to support the classroom projects they've designed for their students. The teachers are raising funds through Donors Choose, which allows those wishing to contribute to give whatever amount they want and get an understanding of how the funds will be utilized. Tytsie Jackson, the kindergarten teacher at Burgess-Peterson, seeks an iPad for her class. "I see a super need for all my students to be able to use an iPad in the classroom," Jackson wrote in her online petition. "Many of my students come from impoverished homes with extremely young parents. They can only see the new technology on the television and can only wish to actually see this piece of equipment in real life…
