One Who Had Little, Gave All He Had

'No one that we knew in the neighborhood had to be alone or hungry this Christmas.'

A homeless man in our church named Darrell, who was going to be alone on Christmas, volunteered to spend his Christmas serving others and some neighbors from Inman Park, Edgewood and East Lake. He volunteered to make food for people on Christmas. The result was that Darrell was able to open the doors of the church on Christmas Day for anyone we knew who would be hungry and or alone on Christmas to enjoy an amazing Christmas meal with other people provided by some of our neighbors. Thanks to the generosity of people who were almost all …

NYE 2013: Celebrate by Raising a Glass, Not a Gun

New Year's Eve brings out an odd Southern tradition: Celebratory gunfire.

At first I thought I was dreaming. But drip, drip, drip of rainwater hit my forehead with enough regularity to wake me up from my sleep. So I stared at the ceiling, grumbled, got the bucket and pushed the bed out of the way. The roofer who came to fix the leak a few days later put a small piece of metal in my hand that he extracted from the roof and explained it was the genesis of what had become a fairly sizable hole. "What is it," I asked him. "It's a bullet," he answered with a look that suggested he thought I was some sort of bumpkin for not knowing. "Well, how did it get up there," I asked. "New Year's probably. People shoot their guns for New Year's Eve to ring in the new year." Funny, up until then, I only saw people in the Middle …

Dallas Home Wins Deck the House Contest and $100,000 for Paulding County Schools

After thousands of votes from across the country, Joseph Felix's home was crowned the best decked house in the country and the winner of $100,000 for local schools.

In this year's Deck the House contest, the second time was the charm. Joseph Felix's Dallas home outshined the other 24 finalists to win the 2012 Deck the House contest and $100,000 for Paulding County Schools. After placing second in the nationwide voting in the 2011 contest, the Felix home in Dallas, Ga., received nearly 11,000 votes this year to finally win Deck the House. The home, with 100,000 computer animated holiday lights choreographed to Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," received about 300 more votes than a home in Coventry, R.I., which finished in second place.  Judging by the 80 comments on the Felixes' Deck the House submission, visiting the home has become a holiday tradition in Paulding County. Many people …
