Georgia State University's expansion fuels Downtown's development.
The old Ramada hotel at 70 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. in Downtown is getting a makeover. The property was recently purchased by an arm of Valdosta-based Ambling University Development Group, which focuses on student housing. The deal for the 1.5-acre site, which Databank Atlanta reported is valued at $7.9 million, comes as Georgia State University continues its footprint expansion for classrooms. That, in turn, is creating a demand for more student housing. It explains why developers looking at projects downtown, have done so with GSU in mind, said Michael Bull, president and founder of Atlanta-based Bull Realty, which brokered the sale. The Georgia State University Police Department has issued the following crime alerts: Nov. 12 - 10:05 p.m. - Piedmont and Auburn avenues: An Armed Robbery was reported to Georgia State University Police, on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. A GSU student was robbed of his cell phone and bag at gunpoint by three unknown individuals. The suspects are described as three black males wearing all black hooded sweat shirts. All three were young in age. The suspect with the gun was between 5’10” and 5’11” in height, approximately 150 pounds and was wearing a black bandana over his face. Georgia State will play the first conference game in school history as the Panthers host Colonial Athletic Association foe Richmond Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome, according to a press release. With GSU's reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision and move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2013, this fall marks the Panthers' first and only season of CAA Football. Georgia State University (GSU) scored a tie and had some losses over the weekend. For the first time this season, the women’s soccer team ended their game in a tie, battling through two overtimes to finish with a 1-1 score against UT Martin. The Panthers (3-3-1) battled the Skyhawks (2-4-2) for almost two and half hours, their longest match of the season. Whitney Ravan scored Georgia State’s only goal of the game in the 19th minute of the first half. In football, Georgia State fell to UTSA, 38-14, Saturday night at the Georgia Dome. Albert Wilson had three 100-yard receiving games a year ago. Saturday, the Georgia State wide receiver got his first in 2012. Southeast Atlanta shooting results in a second former Panther men's soccer player being killed this summer in the city.
Atlanta police say they found the vehicle believed to be involved in an accident that resulted in the shooting death Sunday of a former Georgia State University soccer player. Ayokunle Lumpkin of Kennesaw, was shot during a confrontation on Milton Avenue in Chosewood Park. The incident occurred after Lumpkin followed a vehicle that had hit his girlfriend’s car during an incident the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The shooting occurred at approximately 1:44 a.m. with Lumpkin suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. The 23-year-old was transported to Grady Hospital and later was pronounced dead. Witnesses were able to provide a vehicle description to the police, who searched for a green vehicle that sped away from the shooting scene. …

Barthel was most recently the associate head coach at the University of Nebraska, where he helped build it into a nationally-ranked program over the last three seasons. Under Barthel and head coach Kerry McDermott, Nebraska earned the first two NCAA berths in school history in 2010 and 2011 and then made its first appearances in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Men’s Team Indoor Championship in 2011 and 2012. The 2010 team attained the highest national ranking in program history at No. 25 in the ITA poll.
