Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q Renovations to be Complete by Friday

Last year, a severe storm sent an oak tree crashing onto the dining room and outdoor patio.

CANDLER PARK — After eight weeks of restoration and repair, Fox Bros Bar-B-Q is nearly finished with the renovations to its dining and patio areas. The renovations follow the damage that occurred Aug. 2, 2012, when an oak tree fell on the restaurant during a severe storm. Now in its final week of construction, the restaurant is closed with a planned reopening on Friday. "We are in the final phase of construction for our rebuild and unfortunately we will need to be closed Monday through Thursday," the restaurant wrote to customers on its website. The plan is to reopen Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m.

Fox Bros.' Head Chef Loses Cancer Battle

CANDLER PARK — Charlotte Nelson, the beloved head chef of Fox. Bros. Bar-B-Q, has died. Ms. Nelson, 37, passed away Saturday night, a little more than two months after discovering she had stage four inflammatory breast cancer. Funeral arrangements are pending. Her friends and family had planned a fundraiser Feb. 26, and that will continue as a celebration of her life, a Fox Bros. spokeswoman told East Atlanta Patch Monday. Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q Plans Saturday Reopening

Downed tree damaged 80 percent of its dining area but kitchen, other parts of the building were left problem-free, so the restaurant plans a take-out only opening for now.

A day after severe storms toppled a 70-foot-wide oak tree onto the Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, workers were busy removing the debris Friday and getting ready for business. Jonathan Fox, one of the co-owners of the Candler Park eatery, said the plan is to reopen Aug. 4 for take-out orders. The tree, which fell down on the front of the DeKalb Avenue restaurant, destroyed 80 percent of the dining area, but did not damage the kitchen or other parts of the building. Full repairs could take one to three months, Fox told East Atlanta Patch. As it happens, Fox said the restaurant had been in negotiations with the property owner next door — home to the oak tree — and had recently made a bid to purchase the land.
