UPDATED: Another Carjacking at Edgewood Retail District

Victim was going to work when his car was taken at gunpoint.

EDGEWOOD — Atlanta police are looking for at least two men who carjacked a man early Jan. 20 in the Edgewood Retail District. The victim, who was headed to work at his job in the shopping center, is the second person to be carjacked at the Edgewood Retail District following another incident on Jan. 17. Meanwhile, Target Corp., which has an achor store at the center, said Monday it is stepping up its own security efforts in the wake of the incidents. The victim gave police the following account: At about 4 a.m., he was getting out of his vehicle, a 2000 maroon-colored Saturn LS with the Georgia license plate No. PFG9420, when a man, armed with a silver revolver, ordered him out of the vehicle and to walk away. Carjacking at Edgewood Retail District

Editor's note: Valencia Hudson, public safety liaison for Atlanta City Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong, issued the following crime alert: EDGEWOOD — On Jan 17, 2013 at 10:23 p.m., a carjacking call came up at 1255 Caroline St. The victim was accosted as she was exiting her parked vehicle in the parking lot of Ross Department Store. Three black males were staged up hiding behind a wall adjacent to the store. When the victim exited her vehicle to go into the trunk the one suspect, armed with a black pistol approached her and demanded her car keys and her cell phone. The managing company of The Edgewood Shopping Center should have a visable police presence walking around the whole shopping center, There need to more cameras in the parking lot, more bright lighting, security guards at each store (inside and out in the parking lots.Cameras should be big and bright so that criminals know that they are being filmed.   more ›

Uncle Maddio's to Open in Edgewood Caribou Coffee Spot

Fast food pizzeria to open in next year.

The Caribou Coffee in Edgewood Retail District which closed earlier this year is to become an Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint. The chain, which has three outlets in metro Atlanta, plans to spend $140,000 in renovations to the site at 1220 Caroline St., just off Moreland Avenue, What Now Atlanta reports. That stretch of Moreland going north into Little Five Points is becoming something of a Pizzeria row. Camili's Pizza recently opened at 337 Moreland Avenue and Little Five Points also is home to Savage Pizza and Little Five Points Pizza.

New Zone 6 Commander Pledges Higher Focus On Auto Break-Ins In Edgewood

Maj. Keith Meadows, the newly installed Atlanta Police Department Zone 6 commander, told Edgewood residents he's focused on the auto break-ins that have plagued the neighborhood. The Edgewood Retail District, the neighborhood's anchor business center and a regional shopping draw, is particularly important, Meadows told members of the Organized Neighbors of Edgewood Monday at their February meeting. That's because about 30 percent of all auto break-ins within Zone 6 are off Caroline Street, the main artery into the Edgewood Retail District, Meadows said.
