Pupils designed different contraptions to see who could keep their egg from breaking.
EAST LAKE — The students at Drew Charter School capped off a week of celebrating STEAM - Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math - with an egg drop contest to showcase pupils' ideas for the best anti-breakage design. The contest was part of a week highlighting their engineering-related work they did all year. The school also hosted Designorama, in which craftsmen and craftswomen showed students the design principles of things they created, from woodworking to food.

EAST LAKE — The East Lake Foundation is proud to announce that four of its associates have been named as “best” in their respective professions. These recognitions have come from the local or state chapters of the professional organizations that each play active roles in leading, outside of their day-to-day work. Jeff Dunovant, director of instruction for The First Tee of East Lake, has been named the 2012 Junior Golf Leader by the PGA Georgia Section. Jeff influences the lives of hundreds of East Lake’s children who either take golf lessons as part of the physical education curriculum at Charles R. Coan’s String Orchestra Concert will be February 21.
EAST LAKE — Coan Middle School orchestra students are eager to show off everything they have learned since receiving the Atlanta Music Project grant through the Zeist Foundation last fall. Students received instruments, but the grant also paid for teaching artists to come into the classroom once a week. According to the Atlanta Public Schools blog, "these professional musicians also select students for sectionals and provide group lessons after school." With their new instruments in hand and with the benefit of working with working musicians, the students are excited for the Annual Fine Arts Festival which will take place at the school Feb. 21. Another goat goes for a stroll, this time in East Lake.
EAST LAKE — Remember Doodles the goat and her adventures on Glenwood Avenue in Parkview last week? Well, consider this the sequel. East Lake resident Will Edmond found another wandering goat, Hachi, on Memorial Drive and 3rd Ave SE on Monday morning. Hachi was standing in front of a hair braiding shop. "I went outside this morning and saw him hanging out in front of Bornu Locs," Edmond said. "I'm the Goat Whisper now." Well, "Hachi," Japanese for "eight" wasn't lost for long. Turns out the goat was purchased Sunday by the East Lake Foundation and the East Lake Farm.

Back nine closing in preparation of Drew Charter's high school expansion.
Effective Jan. 2, 2013, holes 10 through 18 of East Lake’s Charlie Yates Golf Course will close in order to prepare the construction site for the Charles R. Drew Senior Academy. Earlier this year, Drew Charter School received approval from both the Atlanta and Georgia Boards of Education to build a Senior Academy, grades nine through twelve and expand Drew’s grades Pre-K through five. The new Senior Academy will be a 200,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, LEED certified school and will house Drew’s Junior and Senior Academies — grades 6 through 12. by Miranda Bryen We want to recognize students who prepared to plant a fruit orchard in a under-served community here in Atlanta, and thank you all for making this possible. On Saturday, Dec. 1 — on a day that felt like spring — a group of volunteers, students and educators worked together to revitalize the edible school yard in the Edgewood and East Lake communities. Fifteen students from Coan Middle School, Carver High School, North Atlanta High School and Sarah Smith Elementary school joined with other community volunteers to prepare unused land at Coan Middle School for its Dec. 12 fruit tree and fruit bush planting. After months of campaigning, it's decision day. East Lake reminds us that it's time to get out there and vote. In Georgia, polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Any voter who is waiting in line to vote at 7:00 PM will be allowed to vote. Here, from the Georiga Secretary of State's website is what you need to know: Voting on Election Day When you arrive at your polling place, you will complete a voter's certificate which asks for your name and residence address. You will then present the certificate and proper identification to the poll officials who will verify that you are a registered voter in that precinct by checking the voters list for that precinct.
