UPDATED: Driver Hits Pedestrians at Asylum

The driver of a '67 Camaro tried to flee but was caught.

EAST ATLANTA — A motorist slammed into a group of pedestrians outside the Asylum in the Village in the overnight hours early Friday morning. Robby Manley was driving a red 1967 Camaro south on Flat Shoals Avenue. He was laying drags, lost control of the vehicle and drove up on the sidewalk, Atlanta Police Officer Kim Jones said. The Camaro struck three men on the sidewalk and pinned one of them for an instant, against the building which is at the the corner of Flat Shoals and Stokeswood avenues. "Once the vehicle came to a stop, Mr. Manley ran around the corner and threw his keys," Jones said. "He was located and arrested. The keys were located." Two of the victims were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with leg injuries. The third …

What Do You Think of a Smoke-Free Mary's Bar?

East Atlanta's iconic gay bar is going smoke-free on weekends and on special events.

EAST ATLANTA — Get ready for a smoke-free Mary's. The gay bar, a staple of Village night life, is now non-smoking on Fridays and Saturdays. Mary's, which aleady banned smoking during special events during the week, will allow smoking on other days during the week. The changes, which the bar announced on its Facebook page, went into effect this week. Mary's enjoys a reputation for being an inviting and fun place, but a long-time knock on the bar has been that non-smokers leave it reeking of smoke or they avoid it altogether. It's something the bar acknowledged in its announcement to customers: "As many of you know, we have for some time been trying to find a reasonable solution to accommodate smokers and non-smokers in the bar. The truth is…

I always find it interesting that when there is news of an establishment having a non-smoking policy, we are overly sensitive to smokers' rights being 'infringed on'. No one ever seems to be concerned about non-smokers' rights at places that permit smoking. I would love to hang out in my own neighborhood without the risk of lung cancer from 2nd hand smoke - not to mention the damage the smoke …   more ›

New Pharmacy in East Atlanta (And They Deliver)

Eastlake Pharmacy opens on Glenwood Avenue.

EAST ATLANTA — Longtime residents will remember the Village's old East Atlanta Pharmacy and beloved ice cream parlor. The pharmacy closed years ago but the Village has an independent neighborhood pharmacist once again. Eastlake Pharmacy opened March 6 at 1308 Glenwood Ave., next door to Holy Taco. Thomas Jusu, the pharmacist, told East Atlanta Patch he picked the location "because I was looking for an area where I already know the community." Jusu was a pharmacist at the CVS in Moreland Station Plaza before going the independent route. Building on those personal relationships, Jusu, who hails from the West African nation of Sierra Leone, said he felt he could better serve his customers. A couple points of differentiation: Eastlake Pharmacy…

Come out Sunday for Drollery, Family Fun and Games, Hijinks and More at Brownwood Park

Bring family and friends out to rediscover the largest park in East Atlanta during the Brownwood Frolic.

EAST ATLANTA — The 30316 Zip code is known for its abundance of booze and tattoos. You don’t have to go far to find a good band or bar to belly up to for the afternoon. Until you reproduce, that is. Once you have someone who can’t vote in-tow, your options for fun in the Village shrink. This fact is not lost on the East Atlanta Parents Network. It formed in 2009 and has since been the parent of seven different age-specific play groups and a number of all-ages get togethers. Now these parents are setting their sights on making Brownwood Park more a gathering place for families than a meeting place for crack deals. They are calling it Brownwood Frolic, the newest addition to the EAPN family get togethers. One Sunday a month there will be a …

Hey -- it's just a fact that there aren't that many places in EAV to take your kids. They're not welcome at several of the fine establishments. I get why. But still -- it's just a fact, dude. No one said previous efforts were for nothing.   more ›

SunTrust Parking Lot Owner Explains the Booting Situation

'I hate booting and I thought it a bit unreasonable that the guy couldn't see he was just there for a few minutes using the ATM and grabbing a coffee.'

by Chris Fogg It's been a bit difficult for me since I took over the slightly worn out SunTrust building in East Atlanta. I feel a lot of people think we are the evil parking empire and I want to clear the air of a couple things. At the moment the parking is for 514 Flat Shoals Ave. only and for customers, employees or clients of 514 Flat Shoals Ave. We have something like 30-38 parking spots. We have over 40 employees upstairs every day not including SunTrust, LIT Realty or any of our respective clients and customers. If you add it up there isn't enough room in the parking lot for the building employees. I have been in the process of fixing up an old, unmanaged building, renovations, growing a company, moving and raising a nine-month-old …

A no pay lots zoning seems odd and outdated. The business district is popular enough there, particularly on the weekends, to justify the use of the various parking lots for a fee. I'm sure there are plenty of people who ride through, can't find a spot, don't know all the tricks to parking in EAV, and move on. To have 30+ empty spaces at SunTrust every night is silly.   more ›

Midway Makes Best American Sports Bars List

CNN Travel cites East Atlanta eatery in 101 best in the country.

EAST ATLANTA – From fútbol to football and baseball to basketball, sports fans on this side of town flock to the Midway Pub. Add in owner Carsten Green's extensive beer menu, and you have what CNNTravel.com says is a recipe for one of the best sports bars in America. The Midway, which East Atlanta Patch readers voted as having the best patio last year, is one of 101 sports bars so honored. (Only two other Georgia brewhouses, Stats in Downtown and the Royal Peasant in Athens, made the list.) To compile its list — the sports bars weren't ranked — CNN Travel considered local "best of" contest and the recommendations of bloggers and sports fans, among other considerations. Of Midway, CNN Travel wrote: This sports temple exudes a populist …

Why My Visit to SunTrust and a $3 Coffee Cost $75

The parking lot behind the Flat Shoals Avenue SunTrust Bank is for customers. Bank customer David Adams parked in the lot Saturday to conduct a financial transaction at the SunTrust ATM and got a cup of coffee at Joe's next door. His car was booted.

EAST ATLANTA — Booting of cars in lots around the Village, the neighborhood's central business district, has always been a contentious issue between lot owners and the patrons of area retailers and restaurants. The owner of the lot behind SunTrust Banks Inc.'s East Atlanta branch at 514 Flat Shoals Ave., received several complaints from the bank about its customers not being able to park in bank-designated spaces because they were routinely snapped up by non-bank customers. So much so, that in 2012, he informed the East Atlanta Community Association that booting of non-customers would be enforced. In this Patch Voices editorial, David Adams, an East Atlanta resident and SunTrust customer, recounts how a March 2 trip to that bank branch's …

Thanks for replying here, Mr. Fogg. My daughter & I were going to Holy Taco last Fri. night, and the street spaces were all full- I noticed your lot, but then read the posted signs, and left. ( Tried Tomatillos too, but all the spaces at and around there were full; ended up at Zesto's, which ain't a bad thing.) Seems like some enterprising individual could make a parking concession there, after …   more ›

Police Arrest Grant Park Man in Alleged Check Fraud Scam

SunTrust Banks Inc. says it lost more than $14K in scheme.

EAST ATLANTA — Atlanta police arrested a 28-year-old man Grant Park on Feb. 28 in connection with an alleged check fraud and identity fraud scheme at SunTrust Banks Inc.'s East Atlanta branch. Erkes Antwon Green is charged with: Police caught him after linking him to a black, 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 with tinted windows and chrome, five-spoke wheels. Police gave the following account of Green's alleged scam: Green opened several online bank accounts at SunTrust in December 2012 in the name of another man whose identity was stolen.
