Neighborhood leaders launch new cleaning program to beautify the central business district.
EAST ATLANTA — Part of the Village's hipster appeal is its gritty rough-'round-the-edges look. But Kate Crosby, who heads the East Atlanta Community Association's recycling efforts, says that doesn't mean it has to be dirty. It explains EACA's beautification effort, project "Clean EAV," to spruce up the neighborhood's central business and entertainment corridor. EACA tapped Above All Cleaners, the company tasked with keeping the grounds of the Edgewood Retail District litter free, to do the same for the Village. Brownwood transformed into a fantasyland for DrugaNacht show.
This giant dragon keeps watch over Brownwood Park (and spooks a dog or two). It is part of the ongoing DrugaNacht: Seven Nights in the Dark Forest performances in the park. DrugaNacht tells the story of Vasilisa - a lovely maiden from Eastern European folktales of yore - who seeks the gift of fire from Baba Yaga, a devil witch conversant in the forgotten languages of the Underworld. The performances, which run through Nov. 3 cost $10 to $12 with proceeds going to fund programs of the East Atlanta Community Association. On Saturday, DeKalb County Commissioner Larry L. Johnson presented EACA President Austin Dickson and President-Elect Lewis Cartee with the "Ernest Prather Neighborhood Association Award" at an annual Christmas celebration hosted by several commissioners at South DeKalb Mall. The award, named after the founder of the Toney Gardens Civic Club, is given each year to the DeKalb County organization that illustrates the best practices in community development.
