DeKalb County authorities executed search warrants Monday morning at the home and office of Burrell Ellis.

DeKalb County investigators searched the home and office of county CEO Burrell Ellis on Monday morning. From a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Three unmarked police cars were parked outside Ellis’s home in the Southland subdivision, Channel 2 said. The search comes on the same day as Ellis testified before a special grand jury investigating county watershed operations. Ellis appeared before local media shortly before 1 p.m. and said he's unaware of any wrongdoing by him or those within his office related to the department's bidding. DeKalb Commimissioner Pushes Recycling

The benefits are economic as well as environmental.

by Kathie Gannon The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners recently took a big step to make DeKalb County greener. Last Tuesday the Board voted to eliminate the initial $30 sign-up fee for curbside recycling. It’s time for more DeKalb residents to recycle. While our county is among the leaders in recycling in metro Atlanta, still only 21 percent of the eligible households in DeKalb currently recycle. The county has a goal to increase recycling to 40 percent, the national standard. In addition to dropping the recycling registration fee, we’ve also established a modest marketing campaign to reach more citizens. It’s my hope that the elimination of the recycling fee is just the jump start needed for residents to get behind this. In just two …

The county has eliminated the $30 registration fee, effective Wednesday, Sept. 26.

DeKalb County is making its recycling service free to residents. Effective Wednesday, Sept. 26, the county is eliminating the $30 registration fee for curbside recycling making it free for DeKalb residents. “We think that by removing the cost barrier and increasing education on how and what to recycle, our citizens will embrace it,” said DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis. The DeKalb Sanitation Division has a waste reduction plan and a goal to reduce landfill disposal of solid waste and increase recycling. The goal is to increase residential recycling from 21 percent today to 40 percent by 2016, or approximately 64,000 residential homes. Recycling is already available in all county buildings, parks, and recreation centers. DeKalb's …

DeKalb County Commissioners Vote Against Smoking-In-Bars-Ban

Commissioners vote 4-2 against

In a widely watched vote on an issue that drew passionate pleas from both sides in the last few months, DeKalb County's board of commissioners voted against expanding a proposed smoking ban that would have made bars, strip clubs and public places smoke-free. The vote – deferred from the commissioners' Aug. 23 meeting — was 4-2, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Proponents said the proposed ban, which would have been similar to existing ordinances in Savannah and and Decatur, would not have had any significant economic impact to businesses that cater to smokers. Opponents to the measure, including the Columbus-based International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association, said a similar ban in Ohio cost that state 5,400 spirits- and hospitality-…

You're most welcome Paul! :) Your article was well done and presented the story fairly without any gratuitous side-swipes at the smokers -- something that's a bit rare in ban-related articles of the last few years. I looked at the "representing workers" trick above. Let me look at another one. You noted in the article that, "For some Atlanta neighborhoods like East Atlanta Village and Kirkwood, …   more ›
