Jovani Oviedo-Reyes is a bi-lingual student who loves to read and is being awarded by his school for reaching his goal.
PEOPLESTOWN — Jovani Oviedo-Reyes is a 4th grader at D.H. Stanton Elementary School who loves reading and has made it under APS' student spotlight this week on the Talk Up APS Blog. According to the blog, Jovani "is currently at 762,565 words and is on track to reach 1,000,000 by the end of the year!" Jovani will be participating in both the Reading Bowl and the Accelerated Reader competition this year. His teachers say that, "he will mostly likely be the only student to read 1,000,000 words in this year’s competition." “My favorite book is Red Pyramid, and it’s about magic,” Jovani said. “I would rather be reading an exciting story than watch it on a TV screen.” Brenda Street, D.H. D.H. Stanton students show that they, too, can be leaders in their education pursuits.
PEOPLESTOWN — In early February, D.H. Stanton Elementary School became the first of Atlanta Public Schools to implement the new Leader in Me program. According to Talk Up APS, the official APS blog, "Leader in Me is an innovative, school-wide model that emphasizes a culture of student empowerment that helps to unleash each child’s full potential." To launch the new program, on Feb. 1, D.H. Stanton invited members of the community to an introduction of the initiative. School institutes rewards program, creates uniform bank and other measures.
PEOPLESTOWN — Clara Taylor, the interim principal at D.H. Stanton Elementary School and considered a key factor in helping keep the school from closing in last year's redistricting, has been fully appointed to the post. The Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education approved of the change earlier this month. Taylor, working with the school's parent teacher association and neighborhood leaders has been busy preparing Stanton for a major initiative, FranklinCovey's "Leader In Me," a school-oriented program structured around fostering leadership qualities in students. Damian Roland was one of the most memorable opponents of the closure of D.H. Stanton Elementary School in Peoplestown.
During the contentious Atlanta Public Schools redstricting, lots of people from all over the city raised their voices to give their perspective and advocate for their schools. One of those voices was a then-rising fourth grader Damian Roland who attends D.H. Stanton Elementary School in Peoplestown. He made two impassioned pleas with school board officials to keep his school open during the redistricting debate. These days, Roland, who is now a fourth grader, is still using voice and power of pint-sized persuasion as a commentator and newscaster for the goings on at D.H. Stanton. Check him out in action.

A promise made is a promise kept. Before the end of the last school year, the residents of Peoplestown extracted a promise from the students of D.H. Stanton Elementary: Keep the neighborehood's parks clean to reflect their pride in their community and they'd be rewarded. On Friday, neighborhood and school boosters rewarded the Stanton students with Morelli's Ice Cream as a reward for doing their part in keeping Stanton and Four Corners parks clean and tidy during summer break. "This is their reward; this is for the kids," said Gregory Burson Sr., president of the Friends of Peoplestown Parks. 'Failure is not an option.'
The sights, sounds and signs of the first day of school were all too familiar. From the squeak-squeak pitter-patter of brand new shoes on shiny floors to the backpacks, notebooks and pencils sharpened just so, at D.H. Stanton Elementary in Peoplestown. There were the happy reunions of classmates ready to tackle another school year and hands waving high and feverishly in the air by pupils eager to answer teacher's question. For some of the littlest ones, there was the shedding of some tears on this, their first day of many being spent away from Mom. by Brenda Street The “Legal Lives” team from D.H. Stanton won the coveted D.A.’s Cup — the top honor — at the annual Mock Trial competition held at the Fulton County Courthouse. In addition to the team’s overall win, four of the outstanding fifth graders won trophies for their individual participation in the trial. Three students from the team were selected for an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. this summer. This was the culmination of weeks of hard work by DA coaches and D.H. Stanton’s counselor, Raye Dupree. This is the second time that D. H. Stanton has brought home the D.A.’s cup. Congratulations to everyone on this exceptional honor!

The Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education — following more than an hour of discussion from the public and board members — voted Monday to rezone Summerhill to Parkside Elementary in Grant Park. The decision — Nancy Meister, who represents Buckhead Patch schools, was the lone dissenting vote — avoids a lawsuit Summerhill residents threatened to file against APS. Meister, a real estate agent, did not directly explain her no vote. But in an e-mail to East Atlanta Patch, she said she does support D.H. Once on the brink of closure, its supporters say they're working on a turn-around plan.
PEOPLESTOWN — On a recent tour of D.H. Stanton Elementary, Langston Longley, a first grade teacher, showed his visitors newly planted flowers and landscaping in the school's courtyard. As Longley and students worked in the garden, teachers who passed the windows that overlooked the courtyard came outside to inquire about what was happening. "We're planting flowers," Longley answered them, recounting the story to his visitors. The teachers' response was simple but significant:" 'Do you need any help?'
