UPDATED: Tech High School Shutting Its Doors

Low-enrollment, budget cuts cited.

Facing a 16 percent cut in funding, Tech High School, the charter institution in Reynoldstown that opened its doors in 2004, is closing. Peachtree Hope Abandons Charter School Bid

School will not re-open this fall, parents of 610 students now must find other schools for their children

Peachtree Hope Charter School will not re-open this fall, after school leaders quietly withdrew their request for permission from DeKalb County school officials to operate for an additional year. "They didn't say why they withdrew," DeKalb Deputy Chief Superintendent for School Operations Robert Moseley told a July 17 school board meeting called specially to deal with the question. "The effect is there's no charter for this year," he concluded. Rumors about the school's fate began circulating among parents earlier in the day. Kendra Shipmon, Peachtree Hope's director, did not return telephone calls seeking comment Tuesday, and the school's website is already down. School's parents and students seek DeKalb County board's permission to continue operations

Peachtree Hope Charter School will have to wait longer for a decision regarding its long-term future. That's because the Board of Education delayed a vote on a one-year waiver that would have given the Parkview neighborhood charter school a year to operate while it applies for a county charter. "Additional information has been received," announced schools interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson at the July 11 school board meeting. She said that information is now being checked for completeness and fulfilment of state education standards. The scheduled vote was pulled from the agenda and a new vote date has not yet been set. The school is trying for a DeKalb County charter after a Georgia Supreme Court June ruling that declared those charter …

Faced With Possible Loss Of Charter School Status, Peachtree Hope Plans Rally

DeKalb County School to rally at Monday's Board of Education meeting

Peachtree Hope Charter School plans to rally at Monday's DeKalb County Board of Education meeting as the school, which is located in DeKalb's Parkview neighborhood, mounts its defense against a recent Georgia Supreme Court ruling that put its future and that of several other charter schools in the state in danger. The state supreme court last month ruled the the law creating the Georgia Charter Schools Commission unconstitutional. The commission was formed to oversee the formations and public financing of state chartered schools. In essence, the Georgia Supreme Court said the state did not have the authority to create elementary, middle and high schools. The state constitution, the court said, only gives that autorirty to local school …
