New outdoor patio and new food offerings in the line-up.

OLD FOURTH WARD — The Irwin Street Market, home to Jake's Ice Cream, the Funky Monkey and Hilda's is getting makeover. The market, located at 660 Irwin St., is undergoing the facelift as the recently-opened Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail has been a popular draw. Plans call for a patio with seating for 60, Jake's owner Jake Rothschild told Atlanta Magazine. The patio, which will open up to the BeltLine, is expected to open next month. "Our whole business changed the day the Beltline opened," the magazine quotes Rothschild as saying. "It's now the center of our operation." Rothschild also is opening JDR Delishery, a bakery. The changes at Irwmin Street Market come as the BeltLine has become a draw for a number of business developments. …

New Pharmacy in East Atlanta (And They Deliver)

Eastlake Pharmacy opens on Glenwood Avenue.

EAST ATLANTA — Longtime residents will remember the Village's old East Atlanta Pharmacy and beloved ice cream parlor. The pharmacy closed years ago but the Village has an independent neighborhood pharmacist once again. Eastlake Pharmacy opened March 6 at 1308 Glenwood Ave., next door to Holy Taco. Thomas Jusu, the pharmacist, told East Atlanta Patch he picked the location "because I was looking for an area where I already know the community." Jusu was a pharmacist at the CVS in Moreland Station Plaza before going the independent route. Building on those personal relationships, Jusu, who hails from the West African nation of Sierra Leone, said he felt he could better serve his customers. A couple points of differentiation: Eastlake Pharmacy…

Dunkin' Donuts to Peddle its Sweets on Ponce

The company plans a 2,100 square foot restaurant.

OLD FOURTH WARD — Get ready for a food fight. Dunkin' Brands Group Inc., the parent company to Dunkin' Donuts, plans to open a 2,100-square-foot restaurant at the southwest corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Boulevard. The Canton, Mass.-based sweets and coffee shop, will construct a new building that will replace A+ Financial Services, according to a report in Tomorrow's News Today. The planned store puts it in a head-to-head combat for Ponce motorists with a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts outlet just a few blocks west on Ponce. The move is part of the company's strategy to beef up its presence in metro Atlanta, TNT reported. Dunkin', which has been in expansion mode globally, has about 50 stores in metro Atlanta. It reported 2012 profit of $108.…

YAY! I love Dunkin Donuts (much more than Krispy Kreme) and was sad when Starbucks replaced the old one in Midtown Promenade. I hope that it works out for them.   more ›

Athenahealth is relocating and plans to take up to 60,000 square feet of space in Old Fourth Ward landmark site.

OLD FOURTH WARD — A New England-based health technology company could bring as many as 700 jobs to the Ponce City Market development. Athenahealth Inc., based in Watertown, Mass., would take 60,000 square feet of space in the former City Hall East building at 675 Ponce de Leon Ave. Eventually, the company would expand that to 120,000 square feet within five years, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Chef Kevin Gillespie Explains Meaning of "Gunshow" Eatery Name

Homage to times with his dad.

GLENWOOD PARK — When celebrity Chef Kevin Gillespie announced his planned departure from Woodfire Grill last year to open an eatery here, residents were ecstatic. After all, Gillespie is a Top Chef alum and widely celebrated in the culinary arts world with multiple nominations  for the James Beard Foundation’s “Rising Star Chef of the Year” award and a nomination for Food & Wine's “The People’s Best New Chef." And he's a resident of neighboring Ormewood Park to boot. So fans are looking forward to the eatery, which has a planned spring opening in the retail space at the corner of Garrett Street and Bill Kennedy Way. What has people scratching their heads, though, is the choice of name for the restaurant: Gunshow. The Atlanta native …

Benton - lol. I figured 'Gunshow' was a reference to how people show off their biceps and ask "does anyone have tickets to the gun show?" Which is funny and not at all offensive, but I like the tribute to his dad too. Either way, it will be an asset to the neighborhood, and people should not be so easily offended. Way to PC in my humble opinion. Looking forward to the trying the restaurant when …   more ›

For Some, Business Success Means Reinvention

After several years in the real estate business, a former buyer's agent finds new success in another industry.

REYNOLDSTOWN — Success in business means adapting. It means change. And sometimes it means reinventing yourself. That's what Johnny Gianoulidis, owner of the Parkgrounds Café, a coffee, breakfast and sandwich shop that caters to java lovers and their dogs. Gianoulidis, 48, spent five years in the real estate business, three of which were great. But the last two years weren't. A buyer's agent, meaning he represented those looking to purchase homes, he saw business trickle as the Great Recession, which began in 2007, wreaked its havoc on the economy. A native New Englander, he could have gone into the lucrative side of real estate and represent the banks in foreclosures and short sales, which were aplenty. But Gianoulidis, who will soon open…

East Atlanta CEO Shares the Blueprint for Entrepreneurial Success

Kevin D. Johnson started his first businesses while a student at Morehouse College. Today, at 33, he runs a multi-million dollar media marketing and communications company.

Kevin D. Johnson isn't one to sit still. I first interviewed him in 2001 as a 21-year-old senior at Morehouse College. At the time, it was for a story on how he and those of his generation were part of a trend of college students who were student entrepreneurs who formed companies while still in school. The website he started then, which was focused on events of interest to students of Atlanta's historically black colleges, earned $500 a month. Fast-forward 12 year years, Johnson, now 33, is chief executive of Johnson Media Inc., a privately-held marketing and communications firm based Downtown. Johnson Media, whose clients include Eli Lilly & Co., Coca-Cola Co., H.J. Russell & Co. and BMW, is a multi-million dollar enterprise, which …

INMAN PARK — The founder of Yogli Mogli plans to open a high-end juice bar here at 300 North Highland Ave. Roi Shlomo plans to open Kale Me Crazy"in Inman Park in March, as well as a separate location in Buckhead, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported. The concept is an all-natural juice and smoothie bar with a focus on those with active lifestyles. There is a market demand for the concept, Shlomo told the newspaper, explaining it was similar to the demand for yogurt when he founded Yogli Mogli in 2009. He is spending $50,000 on construction of the 1,100-square foot space, which is between the Barcelona Wine Bar and Pure Taqueria, the Business Chronicle reported. Kale Me Crazy is holding a logo design contest with $300 going to the …

Major Retail Planned at Glenwood

Plans have been filed for a large retail project at 800 Glenwood Ave.

It sounds like a large shopping center could be planned for the Glenwood Avenue area, but it’s not clear if Wal-Mart would be located there, according to reports by Atlanta Business Chronicle. Fuqua Development has filed plans with the city for a retail development at 800 Glenwood Ave. It would have a 155,000-square-foot retail anchor and 40,000 square feet of neighborhood-scale retail, according to the city's website. A rendering by Fuqua shows it will be called Glenwood Place and will have 170,000 square feet of retail fronting Glenwood Avenue and Bill Kennedy Way. Several readers have contacted Patch, saying they think that Wal-Mart plans to put a store here. Fuqua is already planning a $90 million mixed-use development in Buckhead …

I don't care if it is a WalMart or any other big box. ANY store of that size is going to negatively impact the neighborhood and the Beltline. The site is right across from a High School and the traffic would be a nightmare. Sadly I expect the city administration to ignore all of the protestations and negatives and give Fuqua what he wants. Anything for a buck, right?   more ›
