by Patch Staff Burgess-Peterson Academy students, whose committment to healthy eating and fresh foods garnered a visit last year from First Lady Michelle Obama last year, are headed back to the garden to raise fruit, vegetable and herb seedlings for East Atlanta Villagers and residents of neighboring communities. The students will grow the seedlings, which will be ready for delivery or pick-up by March 26. A schoolwide project, each of the school's seven grades will participate by growing a different variety of fruit or vegetable. The plants are $2 each, which will be used to fund garden education efforts at the school. Each student also will be able to take a plant home. by Patch Staff The Georgia Department of Education named 13 Atlanta Public Schools and charter schools — including three in East Atlanta Patch — as Title 1 Distinguished Schools. The list is based on their ability to reach Adequate Yearly Progress for three consecutive years. Among the schools named: AYP is a federal measure of academic achievement covering various categories of students, including those with disabilities and language challenges. Title 1 schools have significant populations of students who are economically disadvantaged and receive federal funding to assist with the education of their students.

Atlanta Families' Awards For Excellence in Education honors the best of Atlanta Public Schools
A metro Atlanta nonprofit dedicated to highlighting the best educators in the Atlanta Public Schools on Tuesday awarded $7,500 to Robin Robbins, principal of Burgess-Peterson Academy. One of 10 district teachers and principals awarded, Robbins, who has been in education for 14 years, will use the grant toward an outdoor classroom as part of the school's outdoor garden that was visited by First Lady Michelle Obama in February. The idea to highlight the work of outstanding educators was born of a desire to give back to Atlanta, said Katie McDowell, who co-founded Atlanta Families Awards for Excellence in Education in 2006 with her father, Edward G.
