Burgess-Peterson Academy Receives a Happy Feet Visit from Seaworld

The students at BPA enjoyed playing and touching the two-legged Seaworld creatures.

EAST ATLANTA — The talented students at Burgess-Peterson Academy made two new furry friends last week when Pete and Penny from Seaworld made an up-close visit to their school. According to the APS Blog, Pete and Penny are Magellanic penguins. TalkUp APS says, "Seaworld presented the physical characteristics of penguins by selecting a student volunteer to put on a penguin suit, and the students learned about the body parts as the volunteer put on the blubber suit, feathers, flippers, and feet." This sort of hands-on learning is exciting for students and can lead to some very interactive lessons.  "The students learned about the various types of penguins, their habitats, characteristics and more," reported TalkUp APS. In the photos supplied …

Burgess-Peterson Parents Seek Solution to Art Teacher Problem

East Atlanta school — along with Toomer Elementary in Kirkwood — has been without a permanent art teacher since early October.

By now, Reid Tankersley expected his refrigerator door to be showcasing his kid's artwork from her classes at Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta. Problem is, there isn't any. Burgess-Peterson's regular art teacher is out this school year on sabbatical. An interim teacher was brought in and she split her time between Burgess-Peterson and Toomer Elementary in Kirkwood. But Tankersley and several other parents have expressed concerns to Atlanta Public Schools officials that their kids have not had any real art lessons and that supplies for those classes have gone unused. The interim art teacher then went on leave in early October. She is scheduled to return in January. APS officials say they have a solution that should please parents at…

Both Reid and Joe have spent countless hours on their community schools. The issue is with the procedures regarding teachers who are having problems coming to work and how the district ensures there are highly qualified teachers in the classroom if for some reason the regular classroom teacher can't be there. There is a huge problem with substitute teachers in APS. That's not a criticism of any …   more ›

Burgess-Peterson Academy Seeks Kitchen Cart for School Garden

Builder wanted to build a mobile kitchen cart.

by Michelle Rice Hello friends of the Burgess-Peterson Garden. It has been a fun and exciting school year in the garden so far. I hope you've been keeping up with us on Facebook or by checking out the garden when you're at school. I know some of you got to taste some of the garden's harvest at the last PTA meeting. How great was that? I'm writing to ask if you know anyone who could build us a mobile kitchen cart. I'm thinking of something relatively simple: 2x4s with a butcher block top and wheels with brakes. It would have a power strip attached and another piece of butcher block that folds up to expand work space when the cart is in use. We have the butcher block and grant funds for supplies and labor, but I'd love a laborer …

Fall Fest at Burgess-Peterson Academy

The day in pictures.

The Burgess-Peterson Academy Parent Teacher Association hosted the entire BPA family — students, teachers, their families and the East Atlanta community — an afternoon of fun and games at its annual Fall Festival on Oct. 19. The PTA worked hard to planning the festival which included costumed kids (and some grown-ups, too) and prepared carnival games, a student art show, costume contest, arts and crafts, a nail and beauty salon and, of course, face painting. This was the day in images, as captured by BPA booster Crystal Hicks.

First Day of School Jitters: Mom, it's Going to be Okay

Sometimes, the first day of school can be more stressful for mom than student.

The first day of school after five years of being with mom can be a daunting prospect for any child. Mom and Dad are usually there to console, comfort and allay first-day fears. But for one East Atlanta youngster, she was the one the one doing the consoling. Sophie Antell, a kindergartner at Burgess-Peterson, was excited to go to school Monday, along with her East Atlanta pal, Lucy Hollomon. Sophie's mom, Susie Boggs Antell, was a bit nervous. Little Sophie told her mom it would be OK and that the school would let her stay a little while. But not too long, Sophie said, because "I'm ready to have fun."

Butterflies Over Burgess

Burgess-Peterson Academy ushers in spring with a festival.

Burgess-Peterson Academy was all aflutter Saturday with kids, parents and fun as the school opened its new, outdoor classroom. The Spring Butterfly Festival featured arts and crafts, face painting and petting zoo for the kiddies, food trucks and of course, butterflies. The school dedicated the outdoor classroom to Kevin Hester, the school's well-loved custodian who died last school year. A couple of our East Atlanta parents, Susie Boggs Antell and Beth Hogan, snapped up some pix from the day.

Burgess-Peterson Academy To Hold Outdoor Classroom Dedication

Spring Butterfly Festival also honors longtime custodian.

The children of Burgess-Peterson Academy are hosting a party to show off their newly built outdoor classroom April 14. The Spring Butterfly Festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., follows months of work to build the outdoor classroom by parents, neighbors and other volunteer boosters of the East Atlanta grammar school. The Spring Butterfly Festival will feature local food trucks, crafts making, a petting zoo, and other activities, said Jeanne Fore, special events chairwoman of BPA's Parent Teachers Association. BPA's students, who have been tending to and taking care of caterpillars are now in the cocooning stage, plan to release them the day of the festival, Fore said. The classroom was made possible via a $7,500 grant that …

Honoring An Agricultural Great

Burgess-Peterson's littlest gardeners pay tribute to an agricultural great.

All through February, students at different schools within the Atlanta Public Schools district, honored African Americans who've left their mark on the country for Black History Month. At Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta, students, who work in their own school garden, took their gardening lessons one step further with a skit about Benjamin Banneker, anagriculturalist, scientist and inventor.
