Agency renovating foreclosed site for new headquarters.
For years, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity has been based in Grant Park. The agency helps put families into their own homes that they, along with the help of volunteers and home-building professionals construct. But Atlanta Habitat, which has built some 1,200 homes across Atlanta and surrounding Fulton County since its founding in 1983, hasn't had a home of its own. (Atlanta Habitat is a separate affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which has its operational headquarters in Americus and administrative offices in Downtown.) It has outgrown its current rented headquarters at 519 Memorial Drive, necessitating a push for new digs. The current lease expires at the end 2014. Home builder to those in need is building new digs on Memorial Drive.
REYNOLDSTOWN — Commuters who use drive the stretch of Memorial Drive that runs through this neighborhood have no doubt noticed the fencing that has been erected around the building at 824 Memorial at Chester Avenue. It's slated to be redeveloped into the new headquarters of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, which is just up the street on Memorial in Grant Park. Atlanta Habitat is a separate affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which has its operational headquarters in Americus and administrative offices in Downtown. On Dec. 8, Central Fulton Master Gardeners will celebrate its 100th Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home. By the end of this year, CFMG master gardeners will have contributed more than 1,700 volunteer hours and directed and educated more than 3,500 Atlanta Habitat volunteers in landscaping and plant care. For each home, a lead master gardener conducts a site analysis and selects plants appropriate to the property. The new homeowner is welcome to provide input and be present when plants are selected. Then a team of (typically) three master gardeners provides expertise and time to supervise installation of the home’s landscape. “The most rewarding aspect of the CFMG effort is meeting and working with the new homeowner,” said Rich Sussman, CFMG …

Business to Business magazine names Martin and Bixler Women of Excellence
Business to Business magazine named Atlanta Habitat for Humanity's Larrie Del Martin and Susan Bixler, chief executive and board member, respectively, 2011 Women of Excellence. The magazine, which established the Women of Excellence program 13 years ago, seeks to highlight those leaders who contribute to and guide metro Atlanta's civic and buisiness communities. Martin and Bixler, will join 14 other women at the Atlanta History Center July 22 for an awards luncheon.
