EDGEWOOD — Atlanta Fire Rescue Department crews remain on the scene of a large fire that fully engulfed a home at 241 Patterson Ave. SE on Monday. The fire, which was called in at about 11:40 a.m., was sparked by a tree that fell on power lines and then somehow created a gas leak. "It was the gas leak and the power lines that contributed to the start of the fire," Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman Marian McDaniel told East Atlanta Patch. McDaniel said the home completely "burned down and a second home received extensive damage." The persons in the second home were able to escape and no injuries were reported. HomeGrown Restaurant Concepts’ annual Breakfast With Santa fundraiser sold out another year in a row at Osteria 832 on Saturday, Dec. 1, and he'll be coming to Doc Chey’s in Grant Park raised $,3,000 for Atlanta Fire Station No. 10 on Dec. 8. The fundraiser was part of HomeGrown Restaurant Concepts’ annual Breakfast With Santa, which also raised $4,600 for Virginia-Highland Fire Station No. 19. A yearly tradition that aims to collect donations for the fire stations of Atlanta's Bravest, proceeds from this annual event helped bring the 10-year fundraising total to $56,000.

by Patch Staff As of Oct. 1, Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Fire Station 12, located at 1288 DeKalb Ave. NE, in Candler Park will be temporarily closed for interior renovations. During the closure, Engine 12 will be temporarily relocated to AFRD Fire Station 13 in East Atlanta at 431 Flat Shoals Ave. SE. Truck 12 will be temporarily relocated to AFRD Fire Station 18 in Kirkwood at 2007 Oakview Rd. SE. The fire department anitcipates the renovations will be completeed It is anticipated that AFRD Fire Station 12 renovations will be completed by October 15, 2012.

Glenwood restaurant to host event for captain from Station 13.
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department's Station 13, here in East Atlanta, is hosting a fundraiser at the Glenwood Neighborhood Pub Aug. 25 to collect funds to help offset expenses stemming from an illness one of their own is battling. A 20-year veteran of AFRD, Capt. Greg Wise went to the hospital for what he thought was appendicitis, Chris Chaffin, a co-worker and friend, told East Atlanta Patch. It turned out to be cancer, Chaffin said. Chaffin and fellow fireman, Joey Shoemaker, are responsible for the 7 p.m. fundraiser at the Glenwood, which will feature drink specials food and live music. Atlanta's Bravest put out the welcome mat Saturday to East Atlanta as part of an open house to the community. The purpose of the open house was to promote fire safety, fire prevention and personal healthcare. East Atlanta residents were able to meet their neighborhood firefighters take station tours, receive health care screenings and obtain child safety seat inspections/installations, among other initiatives.

The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department will be in Kirkwood March 31 to check and replace faulty smoke detectors that are part of a massive recall issued last year. Fire officials will specifically canvas Clay Street — both the northeast and southeast sections — to check and replace smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, following a 9:30 a.m. briefing at Fire Station 18, 2007 Oakview Road SE. Atlanta fire officials are recalling 18,507 photoelectric smoke alarms distributed to residents and businesses through its Atlanta Smoke Alarm Program because they had counterfeit Underwriters Laboratories labels affixed to them. Hotplate is blamed for blaze that claimed the life of 89-year-old victim.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's said Wednesday an 89-year-old man found in his Kirkwood home earlier in the day died from smoke inhalation. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department responded to a fire at 1460 Memorial Dr. SE at 4:28 a.m. and found smoke coming from one of the apartments. After busting through the barricaded front door, firefighters found the man on the floor between his bedroom and bathroom. Fire officials said the fire seemed to have been caused by a hotplate placed near combustible materials. It did not appear the apartment had a working smoke detector, fire investigators said. The victim's name was not released.

Atlanta officials to make fans available to elderly, too.
Mayor Kasim Reed, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services opened three cooling stations to help seniors stay cool. “Atlanta is in the midst of a heat wave and I urge our senior citizens to take advantage of the cooling stations if they need a safe place during the hottest hours of the day,” Reed said in a statement. “I am grateful to our partners for their commitment to serving our seniors and ensuring their continued health."
