Juvenile arrested following mobile phone robbery attempt.
MECHANICSVILLE — Crimes are usually a matter of opportunity and luck. By that measure, someone should have told a young teen attempting to steal multiple mobile phones from pedestrians in front of police doesn't qualify as an opportune time. But that's exactly what police said occurred Monday night during regular patrols. Atlanta Police Department officers from Zone 3, on routine patrol, saw a fracas unfolding around 10 p.m. at Formwalt Park, just off Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW and Formwalt Street SW. When the teen realized he had an audience watching, he ran. Officers gave chase on foot, caught him and charged the youth with attempted robbery. The teen, who was not named because he is a minor, was taken to the METRO Youth …

Four men were spotted trying to smuggle items including two handguns into the federal penitentiary.
THOMASVILLE HEIGHTS — Usually, people are wanting to break out of prison, not break in. But Atlanta police report that one of its officers thwarted what seemed to be four people trying to smuggle items — including two loaded handguns — into the U.S. Federal Penitentiary. Prison officials say all inmates are accounted for and and that their movements are restricted at the minimum security complex as the matter is being investigated. It's unclear if any of the men were employees or inmates. "We do take the matter seriously," Chris Burke, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman, told East Atlanta Patch Tuesday. "We're working with the FBI and local law enforcement to determine what happened, how it happened and to make sure it doesn't happen again." …

With 32 prior arrests, serial thief gets sentenced in South Atlanta window frame theft bust.
The case of Anthony Flanagan underscores the notion that if something looks off kilter then it probably is (and why Atlanta police continually push their See Something Say Something campaign). Flanagan was arrested in April of this year in the South Atlanta neighborhood when a passerby saw him breaking windows from doors to collect the metal frames. Police said at the time he was going to sell them for scrap. Turns out the passerby who called the police about potential wrongdoing was the chairwoman of Neighborhood Planning Unit-Y, which includes South Atlanta and Chosewood Park. This week, Claire Farley, an assistant district attorney with the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, reported that Flanagan, who had been arrested some 32 …
