The Atlanta Police Department remembers those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Atlanta Police Department lost three of its members last year and honored them Tuesday in a memorial service at Atlanta City Hall. The service was held in advance of next week's annual Police Memorial Week in Washington, D.C. where the names of those three officers, Gail D. Thomas, Richard Halford and Shawn Smiley, will be placed on the National Police Memorial Wall. Senior Officer Gail D. Thomas of Austell, 46, was struck by a vehicle while assisting another officer at a traffic accident on the Brookwood Interchange ramp in between Midtown and Buckhead. CANDLER PARK — Charlotte Nelson, the beloved head chef of Fox. Bros. Bar-B-Q, has died. Ms. Nelson, 37, passed away Saturday night, a little more than two months after discovering she had stage four inflammatory breast cancer. Funeral arrangements are pending. Her friends and family had planned a fundraiser Feb. 26, and that will continue as a celebration of her life, a Fox Bros. spokeswoman told East Atlanta Patch Monday. The funeral for Lillian Lewis, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Ebenezer Baptist Church at 407 Auburn Ave., Atlanta. Mrs. Lewis, 73, died Monday at Emory University Hospital. She and Rep. Lewis, whose 5th District includes Decatur and most of the city of Atlanta, had been married 44 years. Cecil Houston: A legacy remembered.
Cecil Houston was more than a band instructor. He was a mentor. He was a counselor. He was the rare soul every parent hopes will touch the life of his or her child in school. Not only because he was a dedicated teacher, but because he also taught them and guided them through those life lessons that would make those children grow into solid, productive adults. Mr. Houston, 36, was the band leader at Jackson High School. He died Dec. 30 after collapsing at a friend's home. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Fantara; four sons, Cecil III, 10; Christian, 9; Cahron, 6, and Colin, 5. Band leader at Jackson High School passed away this week.
Cecil Houston, the beloved band leader at Jackson High School, passed away this week. The 36-year-old is survived by his wife and children. "The 5th Quarter" — the Wake — will be held at Clark Atlanta University's Cornelius L. Henderson Student Center at the corner of James P. Brawley Dr. SW and Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard, on Monday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. The Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 4245 Cascade Road SW. by Patch Staff Ivan, a 50-year-old male western lowland gorilla, has died, Zoo Atlanta said Tuesday. The death followed a recent decline in the geriatric ape’s health and behavior, the Grant Park-based zoo said. The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams chose to perform a diagnostic assessment under general anesthesia on August 20, but Ivan never regained consciousness following the procedure. “The Veterinary Team had been observing Ivan carefully in recent weeks following weight loss, apparent lack of appetite, and a respiratory illness. Editor's note: David McReynolds, 54, was shot and in killed last week in the Grant Park neighborhood. His killer or killers remain at large. Jackon Faw, a resident of neighboring Peoplestown, wrote the following tribute to his neighbor that he shared on the neighborhood's Facebook page this week. David McReynolds was one of our neighbors. He walked down our street every day to the small grocery store at the corner of Ormond and Martin to buy his “numbers.” David was friendly to the granddaughters of our neighbor, Josephine, whose two girls sit in the front yard every day and know the names of everyone’s dog that walks by their house. Victim said she was getting groceries from her SUV when two robbers accosted her.
A Woodland Avenue resident was mugged by two men in her driveway just before 5 p.m. Monday, Atlanta police said. The 58-year-old Ormewood Park woman, who lives in Woodland's 1000 block, told police she had had just pulled into her driveway and was collecting the grocery bags from the trunk of her SUV when she was accosted by two teens. The bandits, who were between 16 and 18 years of age, ran up to her and grabbed her hands, demanding her car keys. The victim screamed for help and clutched her keys while kicking her attackers. After a brief struggle, the two robbers fled, but not before taking her Coach purse, which contained a credit card, driver's license, house keys and cash.
