'Wreck the Walls' in Grant Park

Demolition of building that once was home to Dottie's Food and Spirits and later Lenny's Bar will take place on Friday.

GRANT PARK - On Friday night, join the Grant Park Neighborhood Association (GPNA) in raising a glass of good cheer in saying goodbye to the building that once housed Dottie's Food and Spirits and later Lenny’s Bar.

The building, located at 307 Memorial Drive, for years was home to Atlanta's quintessential dive bar with great music, a splattering of graffiti and possibly the worst men's bathroom on record.

But it will be no more as it is scheduled to be demolished beginning around 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Demolition will continue through the evening and will be illuminated with lights for all to see.

GPNA sees this as a positive step for smart growth in the form of mixed-use architecture that takes advantage of the urban setting.

In an email to East Atlanta Patch, GPNA Fundraising Chair Kelly Tenedini writes: “GPNA is committed to seeing Memorial Drive thrive as we recover from the recession. We want developers to take a serious look at the benefits, culture, infill sites and historic redevelopment opportunity (proximity to downtown & the Capitol) that this corridor affords. It truly is not just a gateway to our neighborhood but to the city as well, and the intent of the SPI-22 initiative that so many neighbors and City planners put countless hours into.”

The “Wreck the Walls for Smart Growth!” event will take place on Dec. 20 at Augustine's, located at 327 Memorial Drive. Augustine’s will donate 10 percent of its financial intake on the evening to the GPNA and its smart growth initiative.
