Large Crowds Expected for Memorial Day Weekend

Atlanta Police Department's guide to what you need to know.

The Atlanta Police Department urge residents and visitors to the city center this Memorial Day weekend to be mindful of several major events.

“The Atlanta Police Department is fully prepared to protect our citizens and visitors during the holiday weekend,” said Police Chief George N. Turner.

“However, we need the public’s help and encourage everyone to prepare for large crowds, utilize public transportation and to report any suspicious activity.”

From Saturday through Monday, the city will play host to the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival bringing thousands of visitors to Atlanta. Large crowds can be expected at Piedmont Park, Downtown Atlanta and the Atlanta University Center Historic District.

In addition, the parade for the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival will begin at 12 p.m. on May 25; expect West Peachtree Street between Ralph McGill and Pine Street to be blocked.

The Atlanta Police Department will have plenty of on and off-duty personnel available to assist with traffic and security issues.

Additionally, the APD urges visitors to utilize MARTA or carpool when possible to minimize impact on traffic, to always be mindful of their surroundings, walk in groups and avoid isolated areas whenever possible.

The Atlanta Police Department also reminds visitors of the city’s “See Something, Say Something” campaign: Report any suspicious persons or activity by calling 911, or alerting an officer.

  • Atlanta Jazz Festival, Piedmont Park, May 25-27, 2013
  • Atlanta Caribbean Carnival, Morris Brown Herndon Stadium, May 25, 2013
