Welcome to the first day of school at Burgess-Peterson Academy.

The East Atlanta school, and the entire Atlanta Public Schools system, started the first day of classes today.

School principal Robin Robbins, greeted parents, welcomed her charges and teachers at the beloved Southeast Atlanta school challenged the students to be their best.

The school, which draws students from East Atlanta and Ormewood Park, among other neighborhoods, is known for its strong curriculum, heavy parental involvement and extracurricular enrichment programs.

It is among the standout schools in Atlanta not tainted be the cheating scandal that rocked the district.
