Three DeKalb Schools In East Atlanta Patch Fail To Meet AYP Benchmarks

Meadowview Elementary meets goals, however

Meadowview Elementary School was the only one of the four DeKalb County schools in East Atlanta Patch to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress standards.

The other three schools — McNair High, Sky Haven and Gresham Park elementary schools — failed to meet those English and mathematics testing standards in 2011 according to a report released Monday by the Georgia Deparment of Education.

Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, is one of several benchmarks established by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to continually evaluate students, teachers and schools. Schools are expected to improve AYP scores each year.

The schools are graded on test participation for both
mathematics and reading/English language arts, academic performance in those subjects, and what's called a "second indicator" or student attendance.

At McNair, only 79.8 percent of students met or exceeded the yearly progress standards in English/Reading test scores for 2011. AYP calls for at least 90.8 percent of students to meet or exceed the standard.

In mathematics, 55.8 percent met or exceeded the testing score standard in 2011. APY called for at least 76 percent of students to meet the standard.

Here's the breakdown for the other two schools that failed to meet AYP:

Gresham Park:

  • The school met the AYP criteria for test participation and school attendance but failed to meet AYP criteria for academic performance.

Sky Haven:

  • The school met the AYP criteria for test participation and school attendance but failed to meet AYP criteria for academic performance.

Both Gresham Park and Sky Haven are slated to as part of a schools consolidation plan enacted by district officials.
