School's Back In Session

Students return next week, several groups collecting school supplies, schools host open houses

Seems like it was just yesterday that the schools let out for the summer.

But the break is nearly over. Next week, kids in East Atlanta Patch return to school.

A few schools are hosting open houses for parents and students to meet the teachers and administrators:

  • Tech High School has open houses on Wednesday and Thursday for new and returning families. The school, which is  charter institution, is at 1043 Memorial Dr. SE.  The open house is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Burgess-Peterson Academy holds its open house Friday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents and students will be able to visit the school and meet their teachers, as well as listen to the principal's welcome back address at noon. Burgess-Peterson, which was honored in February with a visit from First Lady Michelle Obama, is at 480 Clifton St.

As kids wind down their last week of vacation, a number of East Atlanta groups are collecting supplies to give them.

  • First Iconium Baptist Church hosts a Back-to-school Bash on Saturday in the gym and parking lot at 542 Moreland Ave. from noon to 3 p.m. The church plans to distribute school supplies to more than 100 children and has added some fun with a waterslide, obstacle course, food and other activities. The school supplies are for all age groups but students will need to be present to receive them.
  • The East Atlanta Kids Club is putting together school supply kits for 60 school-children and has a list of needed items. Besides the Brownwood Recreation Center in Brownwood Park, folks who want to contribute to the effort my drop off supplies at Joe's Coffee Shop, 510 Flat Shoals Ave. You may still drop off items between now and Aug. 5 at Joe's or the rec center.Coffee Shop in East Atlanta or at Brownwood Rec Center. Joe's is open between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.. The Brownwood Rec Center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations are tax-deductible.
