Grant Park Cooperative Preschool Kicks Off $10K Playground Fundraising Initiative

Playground project was awarded $15K from Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and KaBoom

The aims to raise $10,000 for a new playground it wants to construct by next spring.

The fundraising efforts follow a $15,000 grant Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and KaBoom Inc. awared the school last month toward a $25,000 playground to replace the existing one.

The grant is part of a three-year, $15 million Dr. Pepper initiative — dubbed Let's Play — to create or repair 2,000 children's playgrounds, through KaBoom, a non-profit group dedicated to increasing the number of playgrounds nationwide.

As part of the Let's Play requirements, the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool has to raise $10,000 to get the award.

The school, which has raised $1,875 of that amount, so far, has to raise its required portion by next spring, said Emily Staggs, the school's communications committee chairwoman.

To get the rest, the school is embarking on a number of outreach and partnership initiatives, she said.

Already, the school has deal with Fit-Wit, which has agreed to give those who sign up for its exercise boot camps a $40 discount if they mention the school.

Fit-Wit also will donate $40 to the school for each of those sign-ups, as well.

The school also is tapping into its current and alumni parents roster to raise funds, created a donations web page and plans to make the rounds at neighborhood festivals, she said.
