Four East Atlanta Schools Receive Distinguished Title I Honor

APS Schools in East Atlanta Made Adequate Yearly Progress

The Georgia Department of Education recognized four East Atlanta Patch schools as Title I Distinguished Schools for making adequate yearly progress in the 2009-10 academic year.

In addition to the honorable title, Burgess-Peterson Academy in East Atlanta, Atlanta Charter Middle School in Ormewood Park and Drew Charter School in East Lake and South Atlanta High School collectively received $8,868 in award money.

“I congratulate the students, teachers, principals and staffs for their hard work and commitment to excellence in earning this special recognition from the state," Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall said in a statement.

According to the Georgia Department of Education, AYP is the cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind Act.

AYP is measured by yearly student achievement on state assessment exams. Title I schools – those with a high number or percentage of students from low economic backgrounds – that maintain AYP for three consecutive years are deemed Distinguished.

Those maintaining AYP four consecutive years or more are deemed distinguished and receive monetary awards.

Burgess Peterson received a $7,384 award. Drew Charter and South Atlanta High each received $742, and Atlanta Charter received a certificate of recognition.
