APS Redistricting: Process Never Easy Or Painless

In letter to Atlanta community, APS superintendent says measure is crucial to a district with "critically overcrowded schools in some areas and severely under-enrolled schools" in others.

Erroll B. Davis Jr., Atlanta Public Schools superintendent, issued a letter to the Atlanta community Tuesday acknowledging the angst in the district's ongoing redistricting initiative.

But while Davis wrote that he understood the frustrations and concerns, the district has no choice.

"Today, the district has critically overcrowded schools in some areas and severely under-enrolled schools in other sections," Davis wrote in an eight-paragraph letter posted to APS' website. "This situation wastes resources and adversely impacts efficient operations and potentially student academic achievement.

He promised parents would have ample opportunities to give their input and help guide the final plan, which he is expected to present to the APS board in April.

"Redistricting is never an easy or painless process. But we have made the entire initiative as transparent and inclusive as possible with parent and community input solicited and incorporated all along the way," Davis wrote. "In the end, a comprehensive redistricting plan will be approved and implemented, starting with the next school year, with the main objective being to continue to escalate student academic achievement within an efficient and cost-effective operational structure."
