APS Redistricting: Peoplestown's 11th Hour Appeal

Community residents, supporters come out for D.H. Stanton Elementary.

First there was surprise.

Then there was anger.

Now, the residents of Peoplestown — who only found out six days ago they were in danger of — are mobilized.

The neighborhood has been a whirlwind of activity. Residents held emergency meetings working against a tight deadline to that it submitted to Atlanta Public Schools officials.

On Thursday, schools officials met with D.H. Stanton supporters to discuss the proposed closure and listen to the community's feedback.

Under the plan, all of Peoplestown would be rezoned to attend Benteen Elementary in Benteen Park.

Those wanting the school to remain open, expressed anger and frustration at APS, saying it was unfair to target their school for closure and inform the community just 10 days before the district's board of education is expected to .

Although the district said all schools were being reviewed, none of the previous preliminary plans that were submitted and debated had D.H. Stanton closing.

As a result, some community residents questioned the integrity of the process, saying they felt blindsided at being added to the closure list at the "11th hour."
