APS Board Approves 2013-2014 School Calendar

The Atlanta Board of Education voted Monday to approved calendars for traditional and year round schools that vary only slightly from the current school year calendar, according to the Atlanta Public Schools website.

William Teasley, a Peoplestown resident with connections to D.H. Stanton, said the changes should have limited impact on learning because the total number of days will be the same as the current calendar.

"Change is never easy but the schedule will provide families with a consistent schedule and eliminate the miscellaneous half days, work days and others that happen throughout the year," Teasley said.

Some of the obvious changes include moving the first day of class.  Instead of students returning on August 6, which was the first Monday in August in 2012, the coming year's start date will be Wednesday, August 7. 

Winter break stays the same from December 20 until January 7th, and Spring Break is still the second week in April. The only other obvious change for students is that the last day of school has been pushed back one day from May 22 to May 23.

The one other change that Mr. Teasley would like to see discussed in the future, is a noticeable change in school start dates.  "The only thing that should be explored if it could, would be to add 20 more days and adjust the schedule for a later start date in late August and end date mid-June."

Being that the adopted calendar is just for the 2013-2014 school year, maybe a real change of start date will be debated in the future.
