Another Try For Peachtree Hope

Charter school expected to make another presentation before DeKalb County school board Tuesday

Peachtree Hope Charter School on Tuesday is expected to make a formal request of the DeKalb County Board of Education seeking a one-year waiver.

The expected application comes a week after the board delayed a vote on a one-year waiver that would have given the Parkview neighborhood school a year to operate while it applies for a county charter.

The board delayed voting at its June 11th meeting when interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson told members the district received additional information from the school that had to be reviewed to ensure its adherence to Georgia education guidelines.

Peachtree Hope missed a June deadline to file its proposed plans with the county.

The school plans to formally submit a request to the Board of Education to waive the District’s charter policy, to allow for approval of a one-year charter term for the school.  The school will later submit a request for a full five-year term, in compliance with all state and local policies and guidelines.

If granted, Peachtree Hope, which opened last fall, could continue operations for an additional year. That would give the school, which has 610 students, time to apply for a regular, five-year charter from the county.

The school is trying for a DeKalb County charter after a that declared those charter schools approved by the state as unconstitutional.
