Zone 6 Commander Promises Full Investigation In Carjacking Police Report Case

APD also focused on spate of robberies in Edgewood neighborhood.

The protocol for Atlanta Police Department officers responding to calls: Take a report.

Why that did not happen following an attempted carjacking in Reynoldstown May 11 is the subject of a department investigation.

"Our officers are aware of what our police procedures are," Maj. Keith Meadows, Zone 6 commander told Reynoldstown residents Monday night during the neighborhood's monthly meeting.

"If the officer was operating outside the best interest of the city, he will be dealt with."

The victim, a resident in the MillTown Lofts, was attacked by two gunmen in the 800 block of Wylie Street after she came home. The gunmen got her car keys and attempted to flee in her vehicle, but it would not start.

They later fled on foot.

What's at the center of the controversy is the responding officer did not take a police report, as is department policy.

It caused a flurry of discussion and concern on Reynoldstown's neighborhood listserv, worries Meadows sought to allay in his meeting with Reynoldstown residents.

He also addressed the recent rise in high-profile crimes that have hit Southeast Atlanta neighborhoods — particularly an attempted kidnapping in Reynoldstown.

Investigators have received a number of tips but nothing has panned out so far, Meadows said.

In response to the a recent wave of auto break-ins, Meadows said the some changes, including shifting patrol officer schedules around and doing checkpoints at hot spots is helping.

As a result of those efforts, arrests are up 60 percent and traffic enforcement spiked 102 percent in the past couple of weeks.

Still there are pockets of concern where Zone 6 is concentrating its efforts.

In Edgewood, for example, there has been a handful of robberies on Hardee and Caroline streets and Seaboard Avenue NE.
