UPDATED: Two Shot on Bike Trail in Kirkwood, One Dies

KIRKWOOD — Two men were shot late Thursday off a bike trail near the 200 block of Warren Street.

One of the two men, who was shot in the head, died overnight, Atlanta police said.

Channel 2 News identified that man as Xavier Arnold, a 21-year-old in the U.S. Army.

Both Arnold and the other man, who was shot in the leg, were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

A female companion who was walking with the two men on a nearby trail, was not injured in the 5:30 p.m. incident, Sgt. Greg Lyon, an Atlanta Police Department spokesman, said.

The three were walking on the trail when they were approached by two other men.

Lyon said an altercation ensued — it's not clear if the robbery was the motive — leading to the victims being shot.

It also remains unclear if they two parties knew each other, Lyon said.

A detailed description of the two gunmen — who remain at large — was not immediately available.

Police are still investigating.
