Two Robbed at Gunpoint in Poncey-Highland Kroger P-Lot

Trio of suspects left in orange Honda Passport.

Atlanta police are looking for a trio of gunmen who robbed two men in the parking lot of the Kroger at 725 Ponce de Leon Ave. late Thursday evening.

The victims, who were with two witnesses, told police they parked in the lot around 11 p.m. They were walking to the Masquerade at 695 North Ave. when they were approached by two gunmen in the rear of the Kroger parking lot, nearer to the North Avenue entrance by the truck loading docks.

One of the gunmen approached the two victims and began asking a series of questions according to the report.

They asked the victims where they were from and if they had any money.

As the victims began walking away, the two gunmen — each armed with a handgun — pulled their revolvers, grabbed one of the female witnesses, and demanded money.

The two victims handed over their wallets and mobile phones.

At that point, a third robber pulled up in an orange-colored Honda Passport and drove off with the two gunmen, heading east on North Avenue.

That part of the Kroger lot had no cameras so there are no images of the suspects, but the victims and witnesses gave the following descriptions:

  • Suspect No. 1 — A black male approximately 15 years of age, wearing a yellow t-shirt and armed with a handgun.
  • Suspect No. 2 — A black male approximately 28 years of age, wearing a white shirt, red and black shorts, a red Atlanta Braves hat, and also armed with a handgun.
  • Suspect No. 3 — A black male driving an orange Honda Passport.

Anyone with any information is urged to call 911 or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404.577.TIPS (8477).

This robbery does not surprise me at all - in fact I am surprised that there are not more such incidents in this parking lot late at nite. Kroger really should be tough on non-customer parking and keep the lot safe, and available for their patrons. Yes - this would require that Kroger keep a guard in the lot for enforcement, but sure it would pay off for them in the long run with a safer environment for the folks who shop at this store.

The do have a no-parking rule that's been long established since they realized folks headed to MJQ across Ponce were using the lot to park.

So this occurred behind the store, correct? I doubt any security guard would have been patrolling back there.
Also, I have heard of people coming back from the Masquerade to the Kroger lot only to find their cars have been towed so someone must be observing the lot.

When I lived in Poncey-Highland, my neighbors always referred to it as Hooker Kroger.

Peralte, looks like we need to have another article about Kroger nick-names...

Yes, Anjin-san: The Kroger at Edgewood Retail District is known as "Hold-up Kroger" (on account of the one woman who was held up inside the store.) The other Kroger south on Moreland near East Confederate is known as Carjack Kroger (on account of a few carjack victims being taken there and others being jacked from there.

I have always known it as "Scary Kroger" - ironically, it is not scary because I shop there regularly. I like the Ansley Kroger better (Krogay) better, but Scary Kroger works just fine for me. It got the name "Murder Kroger" because of a murder that took place about 1991ish. If I recall it right, it was a domestic situation that could have happened anywhere, and not a random shooting related to some other factor about that particular location. There was "Disco Kroger" in Buckhead (because it was next door the Limelight disco), and there is Kosher Kroger at Toco Hills. Isn't there a Yuppie Kroger somewhere?

Damn, Peralte! Starting another Kroger name controversy. Everyone knows that the ERD Kroger is "Hipster Kroger".
Seriously, as a long time Atlanta resident, this is the Kroger breakdown as I've learned it over the years: *Krogay ==> Ansley Mall *Murder Kroger ==> By the Masquerade, named so because of a domestic-situation murder. BTW, it has it's own FB page. *Disco Kroger ==> Buckhead , named for the Limelight disco (was it next door? I always heard that the Kroger location used to be the disco) *Kosher Kroger ==> Toco Hills *Ghetto Kroger/Kroghetto ==> Several locations claim this moniker, but in this area it appears that the Kroger on Moreland (near Custer) takes it *Kro-Migra ==> Corner of Clairmont & Buford Hwy The age-old controversy continues: http://blog.sarahbolton.net/?p=98 http://www.yelp.com/topic/atlanta-does-my-new-kroger-have-a-nickname http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_Kroger

The same damn description... Young black male teen. Now you see why Zimmerman approached the young black male teen with the hoody on. I guess I should brace myself whenever I see poorly dressed or athletically dressed young black male teens walking near me in Zone 6.
I usually have my hand on my pistol though ;) I always look around before exiting my vehicle. I look around before exiting stores. You have to be observant and aware of your surroundings. When things don't look right (ie seeing certain people in certain areas) be cautious and ready to take action and use that 2nd Amendment right :)

It seems that all violent crime in Atlanta is done by black males. You never hear about white on black crime. Its only logical that the police profile them and that the rest of us keep a close watch on them when we are isolated and they are nearby.

"Now you see why Zimmerman approached the young black male teen with the hoody on."
No, not really. If I'm in fear of someone, and the police are on the way, the last thing I want to do is get closer to them. "Gee, I'm terrified, so I'll run closer to them and make sure I can let them get at arm's length of me." Hmmm...

Thanks for the history lesson, Anjin-san!

EAV why would write such an ignorant thing? There has been 'white on black' terror in this country for over 400 years. THIS article is about a dangerous location and the failure of this store to properly secure thier property. I have lived in PH for over 40 years and this is a very real issue which we have been dealing with for many years and has NOTHING to do with the color of the victim or the perp.

Thanks atlgal. Hostility and violence are not confined to young black males in the US. I think sheep dog has a serious issue.

We cant ignore the fact there is more crime committed by black males in Atlanta because we live in the fifteen largest African American city in the country. Its not ignorant its factual, go look at the police area of this site mostly black faces. Now if this was the east patch vermont you would see mostly white faces.

I would love to live back in the city again! I moved to Douglasville over 7 yrs ago and the commute is a nightmare because I work in the city. I used to live in Summerhill as a single person and I loved it. This was around 2000-03 and I was afraid of that Kroger too! I shopped at Publix just down the street and it was a better experience! However with the crime it is so hard for me to even consider moving back with kids! I guess were safe because if you cam to my subdivision you'd never find your way out! LOL!

Anjin-San, my 2 cents on the K-roger nicknames:
I was told that the Kroger in Buckhead was indeed built on the spot that Limelight once stood. I have lived in Zone 6 for 18 years, and my friends & I always called the Ponce location Ghetto Kroger and the Memorial location Murder Kroger. Ansley was also known as Cruiser Kroger (after the Pacino movie).

I live less than a block from the Kroger, and shop there regularly, with my small children. The worse thing that has happened to us, at Murder Kroger, in the five years we've lived in the area is being asked if I'm holding, as I got in my car. I had my seven yr old with me....and we look like the typical middle class white people. The person who asked was a dirty hippie looking guy and his even dirtier girlfriend, both were white. Luckily they were not persistant or violent. However, I do think Kroger should put cameras on the side of the building and to the exit on Somerset. For one thing, cameras are a lot less expensive than a guard, and they don't get bored/distracted. For example, the past thee times I've gone to Deckard's their security guy is playing on his phone and does not even glance up as people come and go. IMO cameras would be money well spent. And, they should not allow people to park infront of the RedBox, because it causes the already crappy parking situation to be even worse.

We spotted her last night (Thursday) just before the storm hit and chased her down May to CliftonRead More then up to Glenwood, where we think she turned into that development under construction across from the school. The storm swept in, and we lost her ... she was clearly panicked. Been back on the hunt this morning with no sign. Please call or text us at 423-653-5636 if you spot her!!!

This is a sales pitch, and not a very good one. This development is well over 2 miles from GrantRead More Park; even the map on the developer's site doesn't correctly show where the subdivision is. And where it is, is across Glenwood from Burgess-Peterson ES, where Glenwood is 4 lanes- good luck ever making a left out of there. But if you want to be able to hear I-20, I guess it's a great location.
