Old Fourth Ward Shooting Victim May Have Had $60K In Cash

Suhrid K. Das' brother says he sold one of his three stores the day of the shooting.

The brother of the 48-year-old man who was shot and killed inside his Old Fourth Ward convenience store Feb. 22 may have had as much as $60,000 from the sale of another property — cash that is now missing.

Suhrid K. Das, the man who was killed at the Banna Grocery by a gunman while closing for the evening, had sold one of his four businesses the same day, his brother, Sanjay, told sulekha.com, an Indian news and business web portal.

Suhrid Das, who came to metro Atlanta from his native India in 2001, first worked as an assistant in a store, before buying three shops of his own, Sanjay Das told the website.

His brother sold one of those stores the day of the shooting, Sanjay Das said, and that money may have been taken in what Atlanta police officials have said is a robbery attempt.

Atlanta police are searching for the gunman in the crime which occurred in the near the corner of Irwin and Howell streets. The shooting has garnered attention from a host of Indian news media and websites for the last several days.

An APD spokesman said investigators are not releasing any additional details about the incident.

APD released a video last week of the gunman believed to have shot Das in the abdomen. Das later died of his wounds at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Several hours later after the shooting, the owner of a sweets and confectionery shop in the same building as the Banna Grocery after a man broke into her apartment, located above the shops.

It's it's unclear if it was the same person involved in the Banna shooting but police are are investigating if the two incidents are connected, APD spokesman John Chafee, said.

The robber threatened to kill her family if she didn't give him money. She convinced him to go with her to her store and gave him that week's receipts.
