UPDATED: Man With Hammer Threatens Woman On Freedom Park Trail

Victim was jogging near Freedom Parkway underpass when approached

A warning to all joggers who use the Freedom Park Trail off Freedom Parkway: A hammer-wielding man threatened a woman late Sunday afternoon as she jogged near the underpass near the radio tower.

Atlanta police don't have leads on the the suspect who began chasing the woman after she passed him under the bridge overpass.

As he gave chase, he shouted he was going to sexually assault her, according to the police report.

The victim, who said the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m., told police she saw the man wielding what appeared to be a hammer and she ran to a business on Highland Avenue to get help.

The suspect is described as being about six feet tall, with shaggy hair and slim build. He was last seen wearing a white tee shirt, dark-colored shorts and sneakers.

The incident prompted local neighborhood leaders, including from the Old Fourth Ward, where it occurred, and nearby Inman Park to issue e-mail alerts to residents warning them to be careful.

"Please be aware of your surroundings," Forrest Coley, chairman of Neighborhood Planning Unit-M, which includes the Old Fourth Ward, said in an e-mail.

Popular with joggers, walkers and bikers, the Freedom Park Trail begins at Jackson Street and winds along Freedom Parkway before connecting with trails in the Candler Park Golf Course and then on to Shady Side Park off Ponce de Leon.
